Once you’ve hung out at That’s Normal awhile, you come to realize that the website is really about three things: books, booze, and kilts. All that other pop culture stuff and hot guys who aren’t Scottish play second fiddle to this trio. Sadly for Whovians, this includes Doctor Who since Barrowman and Tennant have left the show… I mean, Peter Capaldi is Scottish, yes. But, is he the same sexy factor as John and David? Well…no, not exactly.
vs.
If the Scots won’t deliver, what’s a literary Whovian to do?
I pondered this very question one snowy day while drinking scotch and looking out at the blizzard’s results in the backyard. The answer is simple: snuggle into your tartan blanket, pour yourself a warming adult beverage, and grab your copy of The Abominable Snowman by Terrance Dicks.
Because you know who is a lead companion character in that? The Scottish highlander named Jamie McCrimmon. Yes, people, Doctor Who has its own 18th century highlander named Jamie who travels through time and wears a kilt!!! Jamie appears in 116 episodes of Doctor Who, so you’ve got a lot of kilt time to enjoy! He’s played by actor Frazer Hines…think about it for a moment because there is a payoff.
If this wasn’t enough to convince you to jump on the Jamie bandwagon, Diana G. herself admits that her character Jamie Fraser was inspired by Doctor Who’s Jamie…
”This character wore a kilt, which I thought rather fetching, and demonstrated–in this particular episode–a form of pigheaded male gallantry that I’ve always found endearing: the strong urge on the part of a man to protect a woman, even though he may realize that she’s plainly capable of looking after herself.”
In a footnote, Gabaldon states that the episode she was watching was “The War Games”.

We can all agree that Diana G. has excellent taste. That kilt is fetching, indeed!
So, Whovians, stock up on Second Doctor titles of these novelizations and the additional novels listed here and pour yourself a Macallan 12-year neat, because it looks like we’ve just found a way to integrate Doctor Who into That’s Normal’s Boozy Book Club.
(p.s. – cue up your Patrick Troughton era DVDs, guys. The visual of the kilt along with the read-along novelization? Yes, please)
