The year was 1987 and this high school freshman was writing a research paper for Mr. Williams’s history class on Lady Jane Grey, Queen of England for 9 days. Like any diligent high school student doing research, I watched the movie. In the film Lady Jane, the titular role was played by Helena Bonham Carter (aka Bellatrix Lestrange)and Cary Elwes was her equally doomed (they both lost their heads) husband, Lord Guildford Dudley.
I was smitten! The blue eyes, the English accent, the pillowy lips, the sweet smile, 14 year old me didn’t have a chance. Then it got better.
“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” Elizabeth Barrett Browning
That same year The Princess Bride was released, staring Elwes with Robin Wright (House of Cards). Though not a huge hit in theaters, it developed a cult following with such classic scenes as this.
Elwes’s portrayal of Westly/Dread Pirate Roberts, is definitely my favorite performance.
But wait, there’s more.
He showed his more ridiculous side in Robin Hood, Men in Tights.
Then he wore these glasses in The Crush, which at the time seemed super hot. Looking back though, I’m questioning the wardrobe department.
Elwes has also played some real jerks over the years (Days of Thunder, Twister) and though not my preference, he does it well, as I’m sure he will again in Stranger Things.
Years Pass
Cary Elwes has occasionally dropped off my radar while doing voice over work, producing, appearing in TV shows on channels I don’t have and there was no way in hell I was going to watch Saw. But every once in a while I stumble across him again and each time I am reminded of that childhood crush. I mean, look at that face.
Stranger Things Season 3 is set to premier on Netflix some time in 2019.
