We all know we shouldn’t be looking at screens for 23 hours (you only sleep one hour of the day too, right?) of the day but who doesn’t? Especially people like me and Bekah who work on computers and look at our phones to get paid, not to mention we just love the internets.
Once these babies arrived, I popped them on and attempted to better stick to my own list of ways to keep my eyes happy. Follow along with me…
1. 20-20-20 Rule!
Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away (like that Ryan Gosling movie poster on the wall).
2. Adjust Your Lighting Sources
Instead of staring at your neighbors through the windows, place your computer so that light from windows is to the side of you and not in front of or behind your computer.
3. Turn the lights down!
If you can. I’ve worked in many offices where the lights are terrible, fluorescent, overhead and BRIGHT. I’ve gotten more headaches and tired eyes from those conditions than I’d like to remember. If you’re lucky enough to be able to control the lighting or you know, work from home, turn the lights down! Use ambient lighting that enhances the room and is NOT bright. Think: Netflix and Chill level lighting, not rock concert lead singer spotlights.
(don’t judge the venetian blinds behind my standing desk)
4. Turn the brightness down (or up)!
Your computer should not double as a floor lamp! Turn that shit DOWN! The brightness of your computer screen (and phone screen) should be about the same as the lighting around you. Test it out: look at the white portion of your screen, then look around you. If the light seems like a light source compared to the lighting around you, turn it down! If it’s too low, turn it up!
5. Move your Monitor!
Have you set up your desk so that it’s ergonomically correct? Life Hacker has a great checklist to help you set up your computer so that’s it’s in the optimal place.
6. Change Your Glasses / Contacts
Do your glasses have anti-glare technology? Check out EyeZen’s site for more info on their anti-glare and technology that reduces blue light (the bad kind of blue light, that bugs eyes). You can get them added to prescription glasses or on their own at your optometrist.
If you’re like me the day isn’t over until you fall into bed and pull out that phone for a quick last check of social media, the schedule for tomorrow and a few chapters of Burned! Yes, I’m trying to catch up with the last few books of the Fever series since Karen Marie Moning will be releasing the next book in January!! Get excited!
After receiving these glasses, I swapped out my regular glasses and added the Eyezen glasses into my bedtime routine to help begin the relaxation process before bed. I’m half way through Burned and might even wear these glasses to our Boozy Book Club when we discuss the latest installment in ‘ol Mac and Barrons’ story.

Any other glasses/contacts wearers out there? Who’s spending way too much time looking at screens? What are you doing to help reduce that tired eye feeling?
