As you may have heard That’s Normal was given the amazing opportunity to visit the set of Divergent in Chicago back in May to see the sets, watch some filming and talk with the cast and crew. Not only is this a big Divergent week because Allegiant came out Tuesday (are you done reading and ready for this month’s book club yet?!) but today we get to release part of our Divergent set visit with our Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz interview!
After spending the day talking to her other costars (Shailene and Zoe were one of our last interviews) I learned a few things about the mystery, the beauty, the Shai Woodley!
1. Yes, most people actually call her Shai (sounds like the shea in shea butter) instead of Shailene.
2. She’s WAY into health food and visits Farmer’s Markets and cooks organic for people and actually knows what “nettle” is
Q: What’s the coolest thing you’ve done in Chicago?
Shailene: She’s done a lot more than I have, I haven’t done anything… coolest thing I’ve done is the farmer’s market.
Zoe: That farmer’s market is amazing.
Shailene: Have you gone to the outside one yet?
Zoe: No,
Shailene: it’s outta friggin control. It’s huge, it’s giant and they have wild nettle and all sorts of fun things.
FYI: Nettle is used to treat allergies, inflammation and inflamed prostates. So uh, yea I feel like we’re REALLY getting to know Shailene. Like, intimately. Thanks Herb Wisdom!*
.
3. She drinks only water collected from natural springs and water sources in Northern California
In fact I saw her walk around set with a quart mason jar of water most of the day. I don’t know guys… just go with it.
If we would have been allowed to take pictures I would have one to add to this lil collage. Alas, no dice. Or no jar as it were.
4. Shailene and Zoe Kravitz are the Kristen Stewart/Nikki Reed circa 2008-2009 of Divergent. YouknowwhatImsaying.
Q: What were your first impressions of each other? (to Shailene and Zoe Kravitz)
Shailene: OH GOD!!
Zoe: We have a lot of mutual friends, so I heard that I was going to absolutely love her through so many different kinds of people.
Shailene: Same here.
Zoe: Yea, so we were really excited to meet each other
.
5. She gets tongue tied over Theo James, just like we do.
Q: What do you like most about Theo James as Four?
S: Uh, the most… when Theo walked in… Theo is just… a giant… dork. He’s such a lovely human being. It’s really exciting to work with him, I’ve learned a lot from him. He has an entire life outside of acting before he got into this business, so it’s really refreshing to meet someone who’s not all wrapped up in this world, especially someone who’s playing Four.
Welcome to the club girl. Have you seen these GIFs?
.
6. Shailene doesn’t really read stuff on the internet. Not even That’s Normal. Wah.
Q: Can you talk a little about going into a project that’s popular and already has a fan base?
S: I don’t feel necessarily any pressure at all. I don’t really, I have zero, I don’t pay attention to the internet and stuff which I know a lot of people, a lot of fans, are quote unquote are unhappy about that but for me we’re making a movie based on really truthful characters in a book and hopefully we’ll do them justice and hopefully everyone will respond to it the way we’ve responded to it. But at the end of the day if you make a movie for somebody else then you’re not doing justice to your character because it should be made for that person and not for the world necessarily.
.
7. Tris, she’s just like us!
Q: What drew you to the character of Tris?
S: I really liked the fact she was a normal person, put in very bizarre situations and that she’s not a super hero and that she’s not any more brave necessarily than anyone else in the world but she had to rise to this particular occasion because the situation calls for it. And I think it’s really beautiful that we get to explore the courage, the courageous side of young adults.
.
8. Shailene uses big, possibly made up, words!
Q: Do you relate to your character at all?
S: I relate to Tris in the sense that I think that everyone is very normal and whether you allow your light to shine which makes a difference, and I think in this movie Tris by the end of it, her light is helping save Dauntless or Abnegation and everybody from the government which is very synergistic to a lot of things that are happening in today’s society.
