The Story of Rap
I’ve admitted before that my son’s favorite song is Nobody Speak by DJ Shadow and Run The Jewels. I know, such a good Mama. He loved it in the womb and loved it even more once he was born. I have countless videos of him moving his hands around and falling asleep to this song as a newborn. I can’t put them on social media for fear of my mother and her friends actually hearing the song.
But rap music has a firm place in my heart and I am such a huge fan of the entire genre of music. Everyone from Wiz Khalifa to Watsky. I saw this book and knew immediately it had a place in my home. The Story of Rap goes all the way to the beginning and tells the story of how rap music came to be. It even talks about how people tried to get it banned! Such a good little book!
The Story of Rock
Just like with The Story of Rap, The Story of Rock goes through the history of this musical genre and talks about the artists who started created rock music and goes up to the artists of today. I particularly loved the Janis Joplin page. I love Janis so much.
The rhyming scheme throughout the book makes it a fun one to read to my toddler and also makes me giggle when they talked about Bowie knowing how to dress. #Understatement
Wild Bios: William Sheepspeare
Wild Bios: William Sheepspeare is so cute and educational that it may just become a household favorite. This adorable little book tells the story of William Shakespeare but with a…lamb-y twist. All throughout the book words that relate to lambs and sheep are highlighted which also makes this two books in one.
One book about a famous playwright and poet and another about sheep. This book may be made for babies and toddlers, but I can really see it helping older kids first learning about Shakespeare as well.
Wild Bios: Frida Catlo
Out of all the toddler books we reviewed today, this one Wild Bios: Frida Catlo is my son’s favorite. I wish I could say it’s because he has a deep appreciation for Frida Kahlo’s work and vision but in reality, it’s because the book is full of cats. Or, “keeee-caaats” as my son says about a hundred times every time we read this guy. He’s obsessed with cats. He doesn’t know this yet, but his mama is allergic to keeee-caats, so this is as close as he’ll get to having one for a long time.
Just like with William Sheepspeare, Frida Catlo goes through Frida Kahlo’s life but with a distinctive feline twist. We love this book not just for supporting a female historical figure, but also for all the adorable little meows my son squeaks out whilst reading it.
