Although I tend not to make resolutions, I’m changing that this year. 2019 is the year I’m making some pop culture resolutions.
What are pop culture resolutions? Think of anything you want to read, watch, listen to in the upcoming year. Even better, accomplishing all your pop culture resolutions while working out at the gym those three to five times a week you totally plan on maintaining all year long. Just kidding. You can accomplish these resolutions in the comfort of home and with no bra.
What I Want to Listen to in 2019
Weezer’s New Album: It’s 1994 all over again, and I’m geeking out over Rivers Cuomo and Weezer’s return with Weezer (Black Album). Not much is known about the self-titled album except that it will include a song called “Zombie Bastards,” and the cover art looks like some kinky nerd shit:
Podcasts I Started but Never Finished/Forgot About: I’m terrible when it comes to podcasts. Go ahead and quiz me about the first and second seasons of Serial. I’ll ace it and then ask for extra credit because that’s who I was as a student. Now ask me about the third season, and I’ll most likely change the subject and go back to discussing the first two seasons. I still have to finish the first season of Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History, and I have over two months worth of The Daily to stream. Thank God I have 365 days to finish.
Taylor Swift’s New Album: Supposedly, Taylor Swift likes to release a new album every three years. Although Reputation was released in fall of 2017, many believe that she will release new music this year. Why? Well, she’s still in love, Kanye is still running his mouth, and we know all of this is fodder for more music.
What I Want to Watch in 2019
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: The best show on television returns January 10th, and if anyone calls me between 9:00 and 9:30 pm on this day, I will forever cut a bitch. If that bitch is you, so be it. You’ve been warned.
A Discovery of Witches: I’m a DOW virgin. I have never read the book (more on that later). However, after attending this year’s Discovery of Witches panel discussion at SDCC, I fell in love with the cast and the author, Deborah Harkness. When it was announced that Sundance TV would stream the series, I deep dived to see if my cable provided offers Sundance (they do) and pretty much let everyone who cares about me know that on January 17th, I’m going to do my first binge watch of 2019. Bathroom breaks will be included this time.
Stranger Things Season 3: Netflix announced that the third season will premiere on 4th of July, released this poster that we all stared at for at least an hour, and we all lost our damn minds. What is Will and Eleven looking at? Do the fireworks mean anything? Why did we think that bowl cuts were acceptable in the 80s?!
What I Want to Read in 2019
Goals for 2019
Ever since I was a child, I was an avid reader. No matter the setting, there was a book in my hand. My brother’s football games? I was on the bleachers, my head in my mom’s lap and Little House on the Prairie in my hands. Stopping for a passing train meant time for me to read that book in my purse.
For some strange reason, 2018 was not a Goodreads challenge year for me. I could give you a million excuses, but I’ll just admit that last year I was just plain lazy when it came to reading. This year, I resolve to fix that.
My reading challenge for 2019 is to read those books that others suggested for me: Discovery of Witches, The Bronze Horseman, The Nightingale, any erotica that makes me grateful for my eReader, and of course anything anyone else suggests to me. So, if you think you have a book that I need to read, let me know! It will go on the list. (No joke, I have a list.)
Here’s to making 2019 my pop culture bitch.
