The “Don’t Kill No One This Holiday Season” Running Mix

in Music on 11/29/18 by Amy Leave a Comment

It’s the holiday season…the time of year when our bodies are wrapped in a metaphorical tinsel of stress. For every frosted sugar cookie, there is a long line at Target. For every cherub-faced child making a list for Santa, there is a racist uncle who wears a red hat that reads, “The Caravan Ruined Christmas.” For every gleaming sterling silver menorah, there is a wreath made out of red and green shotgun shells.

Ho ho ho.

The goal this season should be Don’t Kill No One. And one of the best ways to ensure your mind stays calm is by moving your body. Running releases endorphins and reduces anxiety, two things that are key in keeping me out of jail every December.

Whether you are starting your Boston Marathon training (only 20 weeks away!) or trying to enjoy holiday goodies without buying new pants, let me present you with a fresh running mix to enjoy while logging miles on those cold and slippery streets.

Run. And don’t kill no one.

Thunderclouds – LSD, featuring Sia, Diplo, Labrinth

Where did love go?
When all is said and done?
Hey now put your hands in the air
I’ma go through your stuff

Where did love go?
You put the running into run
You asking me to stay
But I never met a man I could trust

Hey, yeah

thank u, next – Ariana Grande

I’m so fucking thankful for my eggs.

The Breakup Song – Francesca Battistelli

I know who I am
I know I’m strong
And I am free
Got my own identity
So fear, you will never be welcome here

Boys – Lizzo

I like big boys, itty bitty boys
Mississippi boys, inner city boys
I like the pretty boys with the bow tie
Get your nails did, let it blow dry
I like a big beard, I like a clean face
I don’t discriminate, come and get a taste
From the playboys to the gay boys
Go and slay, boys, you my fave boys

Pussy Is God – King Princess

This is the thematic follow up to Ariana’s “God Is A Woman.”

The Greatest Show – The Greatest Showman Cast

I’m a little late to The Greatest Showman party. But now that I have watched it…I. Am. All. In.

Yes, there is a re-imagined album out now, but that Panic at the Disco version pales in comparison to the original. No one does it better than Wolverine in a top hat.

It’s everything you ever want
It’s everything you ever need
And it’s here right in front of you
This is where you wanna be (this is where you wanna be)
It’s everything you ever want
It’s everything you ever need
And it’s here right in front of you
This is where you wanna be

Lazy Eye – Silversun Pickups

The band scratches my “early 90s girl rocker band” itch in right ways, even if the lead singer is a dude. A relative oldie…but a goodie. It would have been right at home on the Singles soundtrack.

I’ve been waiting
I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life
But it’s not quite right
And this real
It’s impossible if possible
At whose blind word
So clear but so unheard

Why Did You Do That – Lady Gaga

If you haven’t seen A Star Is Born yet, what are you doing with your life? Take a day off from running to go and watch the movie of the year. Bring a can of wine and Kleenex.

Why do you look so good in those jeans?
Why’d you come around me with an ass like that? You’re making all my thoughts obscene
This is not, not like me
Why you keep on texting me like that? (Damn)
Got other things I need my mind on, yeah
Other responsibilities
This is not, not like me

still feel – half.alive

These guys hate capital letters.

I still feel alive
When it is hopeless, I start to notice
And I still feel alive
Falling forward, back into orbit

Cool Out – Matthew E. White, Natalie Press

Fell in love with this song the moment I heard it on the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before soundtrack.

But cool out baby please
No one likes it when you tease any further

You know it baby all the things that you do
(Hey, Hey)
I like to think that honey I know them too
Forever alone but baby I do it with style

Back to You – Selena Gomez

I added this one because I’m going through a breakup and this whole mix might be a giant subtweet.

I Want to Break Free – Queen

But life still goes on
I can’t get used to living without, living without
Living without you by my side
I don’t want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own

Simple Romance – COIN

If you like Spoon, you will love COIN.

&Run – Sir Sly

I like any song with the word run in the title.

Heavy as the setting sun
Oh, I’m counting all the numbers between zero and one
Happy, but a little lost
Well, I don’t know what I don’t know so I’ll kick my shoes off and run (yeah)
Kick my shoes off and run
Kick my shoes off and run (run, we’ll be running barefoot)
Kick my shoes off and run
Kick my shoes off and

Beautiful – Bazzi, Camilla Cabello

This playlist has a longish cool down section. Slow your pace. Walk. Breathe deep. Smell the balsam. Stretch. Remember…the goal is to not commit murder this December.

The way that Gucci look on you, amazing
But nothing can compare to when you’re naked
Now a Backwood and some Henny got you faded
You’re saying you’re the one for me, I need to face it

Lemonade – Conner Youngblood

You know who loves this song? Gritty.

The Maze – Manchester Orchestra

Wish me a wonder and wish me to sleep
You don’t have to wander to hear when I speak
There is nothing I’ve got when I die that I keep
It’s amazing

Tightrope – Sara Bareilles

This is my favorite song from The Greatest Showman, and while I love the Michelle Williams, this one feels fresh and different, something you need in a cover. (Too bad Weezer didn’t know that before it released its version of “Africa.”)

Some people long for a life that is simple and planned
Tied with a ribbon
Some people won’t sail the sea ’cause they’re safer on land
To follow what’s written
But I’d follow you to the great unknown
Off to a world we call our own

Mountains and valleys, and all that will come in between
Desert and ocean
You pulled me in and together we’re lost in a dream
Always in motion
So I risk it all just to be with you
And I risk it all for this life we choose

So remember! Get that bread endorphin! And don’t kill no one. Check out the entire playlist on Spotify!
