To All The Young Boys I’ve Loved Before

in Movies on 08/20/18 by Bekah Leave a Comment

If you only get your news from TN, then you may not have known that “To All the Boys I’ve loved Before” came to Netflix this weekend. We love this book and have been excited about this movie. Go watch it, you won’t be disappointed. Someone else here on TN might tell you MORE about the movie, but that’s not going to be me. However, I do want to tell you about someone from this movie:

Peter Kavinsky

Peter is the main character, Lara Jean’s, love interest. And this is the guy who plays Peter Kavinsky:

He played him perfectly. I think I liked him more in the movie than I did in the book(s). Here, look at him again:

A post shared by Noah Centineo (@ncentineo) on Jul 10, 2018 at 12:35am PDT

That’s Noah Centineo, and he plays 11th grader Peter Kavinsky perfectly.

Prepare yourself for what is coming next: Noah’s age:

He’s 22.

Not bad, right? You were worried I was going to tell you this guy I have a new crush on is just a few weeks over 18, right? I was worried about that too. (I’d even argue he has a face a few years older than 22) But then I remembered I’m now 35, and I was a teenager when this mature-faced handsome boy was born.

Ew.

Let’s talk about Age

This summer (I turned 35 in June), I’ve never been more aware of how I’m aging. It’s partly because I’m officially in my ”mid thirties” (33-34 doesn’t count!), the increasingly deep line in between my eyes, how my knees hurt every time I run, and how I am definitely going to be considered ‘geriatric’ if I get pregnant from here on out. And before you say “Oh God, Shut up Bekah.. you’re NOT old “ or “I WISH I was 35.. I’m X # of years older than you,” I’m actually NOT complaining. I’m comfortable in my skin and fairly comfortable (most days) with my age. Plus botox exists, guys.

But what’s a girl to do whenever a cute new boy in Hollywood is…. a boy? And when, to quote Matthew McConaughey and that creepy, totally inappropriate thing he said, “ I keep getting older, they stay the same age.”

It’s true. If I’m going to see my favorite YA books come to the screen, more than likely the adorable fresh-faced guy playing the teen heartthrob will be close to or just over being a teenager. For Forever.

We can Crush on the Dads

Beth said she found herself more attracted to John Corbett as Lara Jean’s dad than any of the boys.

And that isn’t a bad thing. John looked the best I’ve seen him since he played Aidan on Sex and the City. He plays a doctor, he delivers babies, he’s a father to 3 girls, and a widower. He’s the perfect combo of crush-ability for ‘old ladies’ like us.

57 year olds, man… dressing like a young Justin Bieber pastor.

But what about the boys?

And so yeah, the dads are hot. Not just in “To All the Boys,” either.

But so is Noah Centineo playing Peter Kavinsky. And the guy who played Josh Sanderson was adorable too, though I’m over my brooding artist stage.

I cannot with this

So as I pondered how to feel less creepy about it, I realized that 35 year old Bekah is TOTALLY into the dad.

But 16 year old Bekah is into Peter (and therefore Noah).

If this movie came out when I was in high school, I would be in full on Ba Luhrmann Romeo and Juliet mode, watching the movie every weekend, crying over the tragedy and how no one will everrrrr love me like that, with posters of Leo DiCaprio all over my walls, kissing his face before I go to sleep at night – A full on OBSESSION.

16 year old Bekah sees herself in Lara Jean (more than I can even express), and 16 year old Bekah wishes she had the guts to tell that cute boy she liked him.

Crushing on Noah (and Peter) happens for the same reason I love YA. It’s first love; It’s the first crush; It’s remembering when holding hands and just kissing was ‘enough’; It’s youth and innocence.

I don’t say that to be creepy– 35 year old Bekah isn’t into the youth and innocence of these young 20somethings. But she’s remembering being THAT girl in high school. And wishing she had thatt guy. And for those 90 minutes when I watch young love on camera, I’m fantasizing about my young self getting that young (and age-appropriate) boy.

Old lady Bekah will still take Leo though!

What do you think? How do you handle the boys staying the same age while we get older?
