{Review + Giveaway} Christina Lauren’s Love and Other Words is the Women’s Fiction Novel We’ve Been Waiting For

in Book Reviews on 04/06/18 by Heidi Leave a Comment

There’s no shame in our romance reading game here at That’s Normal. Give us young adult, new adult, cowboys who like city girls, gay hockey players, time traveling caveman erotica, we’ll take it all. We’re the Statue of Liberty of romance novels, only our huddled masses are piles of books with shirtless men on the cover. It’s awesome. But sometimes, and I know this is hard to believe, even we need a break from the standard romance tropes.

Christina Lauren is here to save your Goodreads shelf with Love and Other Words.

Obviously our favorite author duo, Christina Lauren, can write the hell out of a sexy romance novel that’ll make you want your husband even when he’s snoring in the bed next to you while you read. What, just me? But now we know they can also write a women’s fiction novel that is so relatable it made me cry, laugh, and stay up all night reading it cover to cover in one sitting.

Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother…only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.

Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.

You know that feeling you get about a third of the way into a good book when you just know it’s going to be one you re-read? That’s Love and Other Words. It has all of the romance and heat that you’d expect from a Christina Lauren book, but its focus is really on Macy’s story of childhood loss and how it shaped her future. Christina Lauren for grown folks, people. You’re going to be into it.

Love and Other Words releases Tuesday, April 10th. Pre-order it now.
