And if you pay attention to our group text threads (please don’t) you’d know that we’ve been minorly obsessed with every new bit of casting news on Netflix’s The Crown.
And if you pay attention to my twitter feed, you’d know what Tobias liked one of my tweets JUST YESTERDAY.
We’re married now
And if you pay attention to entertainment news, you’d know that the finest of announcements has just landed to bring ALL of these obsessions under one fangirl umbrella.
Tobias Menzies Is the New Prince Phillip in The Crown
You could knock me over with a feather when Deadline released this exclusive this afternoon. Obviously, Netflix was having a bit of trouble finding the right fit for the Duke of Edinburgh’s overly large, double-breasted, middle-aged jackets. Early rumors had Paul Bettany pegged for the role (a perfect bit of casting, if it had worked), but talks fell through. And then Hugh Laurie was bandied about, and we were all suddenly wondering if seasons 3 and 4 would hold up to the casting perfection of Claire Foy and Vanessa Kirby and Matt Smith.
But enter … our bae, Tobias. And suddenly I’m not thinking or caring about anything like height or demeanor or hairlines or mouth shape. ALL I care about is how amazing Tobias is at transformations, and how lucky we are to know him well at this point in his career. After all, it looks like a few nominations and a couple landmark performances on Outlander have done his career no harm indeed. We aren’t the only Tobiased ones at this point.
But looks like we need to change it to Tobiased™.
Even if you weren’t into The Crown before, this is the time to catch up. Undoubtedly, Matt Smith was the weaker link in seasons 1 and 2 in comparison to Claire Foy who SHONE in every episode. But Tobias up against Olivia Colman is a powerhouse duo.
So, congratulations, Tobias! We won’t even begrudge you Frank Randall’s unfortunate departure from that other show because THIS is the follow up to Outlander and King Lear and The Terror that we ALL needed.
