I will tell you now, it is kinda a high commitment show. Right now, there are two seasons out and the third set to premiere this fall. And it has so many intertwined story lines, you need to be up to date when watching the next episode. But it is so worth your binging time.
What’s the deal?
Jane is your typical type A person. She has a plan and she’s not going to repeat her mother’s irresponsible behavior. It’s all school, her family, her religion, and her boyfriend. She is saving herself for marriage per her grandmother’s wishes and her religious/romantic beliefs. It’s all going according to plan. Until it’s not. Jane goes in for her first pap smear and her doctor accidentally confuses her chart and artificially inseminates her. So, yeah, plans are all down the drain. Also, the father happens to be someone she had a massive crush on before, so that’s not good for her realtionship.
The Main Players:
Jane: She is a smart student/ wannabe romance writer in college who lives with her grandmother and mother, who she is very close with. So, they are all quite shocked when they find out that Jane has been knocked up. Jane is super funny and very self-aware. She keeps you grounded in the crazy telenovela-type twists in the show. She is usually half as shocked and confused as the viewers. Gina’s portrayal of Jane is more than enough reason to watch this show. She is something to behold on screen. Her younger mother, Xo, and her grandmother, Alba, also play a big role in the show.
Rafael: He is the sexy, ex-playboy type whose sperm got Jane accidentally pregnant. He also happens to be the heir of the hotel Jane works at in Miami. Yes, he was a bad guy, but he has been through a lot. Mainly, cancer. That’s why he had his sperm frozen because he most likely can never have kids. Rafael desperately wants Jane to have the baby, but knows it’s up to her. Also should mention, his sister, Luisa, is the crazy OBGYN that inseminates Jane.
Micheal: He is Jane’s detective boyfriend. He’s the kind of guy that truly loves Jane and she knows she can always count on him. Kind of a snooze at times when compared to the hot chemistry between Jane and Rafael, but he’s nice enough. Also, the detective work he does in trying to stop the infamous crime lord, Sin Rostro, has a huge part in the show.
Petra: She is Rafael’s crazy wife. She’s is a manipulator to the highest degree and will stop at nothing to get what she wants. And that is certainly not Jane in her life. Even though she cheated on Rafael and tries to set him up all the time, she does really love him deep down. Though, Rafael is more than a little over her. But Petra willing to do some crazy shit so Jane never has him.
What’s so great about it?
The show makes fun of itself in a way. Jane watches a lot of telenovelas and the show uses a lot of tropes from those type of shows. The show is half grounded in the drama of everyday life and half immersed in the crazy story telling of telenovela’s with a terrific dose of comedy thrown in. It deals with real issues and doesn’t make motherhood or romance out to be perfect, far from it. It will make you laugh out loud, but also melt inside. It’s like someone said let’s throw everything into this show and make it work. And somehow it does work, so well.
Perk of watching:
The show is narrated by this Latin Love Narrator. And while that might sound annoying or weird, it is honestly one of the best parts of the show. And by the end, you will be wanting him to narrator your whole life. He helps explain all the crazy stuff on the show while making you laugh. And he also got nominated for a Narrator Emmy, so that’s something.
Also, this is a nice perk.
Jane the Virgin really does have everything. Drama, humor, charm, romance, family. Literally everything and that’s why it’s so fantastic. You can binge the first two season on Netflix right now.
