What’s the Deal?
This is probably one of the most daring shows I’ve seen on TV and it depicts one of the best female friendships ever. The shows follows Ilana and Abbi as they try to figure out their life in that weird transitionary period where you are supposed to have a clue but don’t. Their life is anything but dull and ordinary and you watch as they go through the most bizarre situations in a hilarious fashion. They are broke and just trying to live. And it’s so real. And hilarious.
The Main Players:
Abbi
Abbi is half of the hilarious duo. She is usually the more cautious and less confident friend compared to her die-hard bestie. Abbi is a wannabe artist and works at a classy gym as a cleaning lady to make a buck. She is more ambitious than Ilana and is really trying to make it in life. Abbi also has a major obsession with Bed, Bath, and Beyond. You will identify with her and root for her while cheering on her more daring adventures.
Ilana
This girl is craaaazy, but that is what makes her so amazing to follow and the fact that she is the most loyal friend to Abbi. Her hobbies are smoking pot, being sexually liberated, and doing the minimum amount of work. Ilana has zero ambition, but her charm usually gets her out of anything she is expected to do. She’s hilarious and that friend who is always trying to convince you to be a rebel.
What’s so great about it?
The shows succeeds because it is real and the humor is grounded in everyday life. If you are in your twenties or thirties, you will see yourself in these girls and laugh at all the times you messed up as much as them. Their pursuit for money and food will make you cringe and laugh at the same time. From cleaning apartments in their bras to performing in central park, it gets as real as it can.
It’s a everything goes wrong kind of show, but it contrasts that with humor and the knowledge that you can always shrug off some mistakes when you’re young. It also may make you either be more in love with living in NYC or make you never want to live there in your life. Times square and the subway looks a lot less fabulous on this small screen.
Perk of Watching:
This show has so many amazing guest stars, it’s ridiculous and awesome. Kelly Rippa, Amy Poehler, Fred Armisen, Patricia Clarkson, Seth Rogen, Alia Shawkat, just to name a few. Abbi and Ilana are funny enough to carry the show, but add in these amazing comics and it gets even better. Also Amy Poehler is a producer of the show, so that should give you a reason to watch if anything.
