Comics for young girls? You bet!

in Books on 06/29/16 by Patricia 2 Comments

Well it’s about time! There has been much uproar about the lack of prominent female heroes for young girls to look up to. I applauded Star Wars for having a strong female lead in Rey but then they dropped the ball in a major way when they failed to market their female lead in merchandise. Girls, it seemed, were out of luck if they wanted to have figures that represented them to play with.

I love superhero movies but, again, the main focus is on the men – although kudos goes to Marvel and DC for their latest movies where the women are finally being given a chance to show that they are not just damsels in distress that need a muscly man to save save them.

DC Comics is finally recognizing that girls like super heroes too and came up with a new brand targeted directly at young girls. Yes, girls read comic too and it is nice to see that female superheroes will be the stars.

The DC Super Hero Girls: Finals Crisis graphic novel follows some familiar faces as they navigate their way through super hero high school. This is not a tarted up version of female superheroes that we are so used to seeing in comics. The story was simple and perfect for the tween crowd. I was so happy to see a cooperative relationship between the characters – no cattiness that is often portrayed in stories about female friendship. The superhero outfits have been re imagined in a way that is much more appropriate for fighting bad guys – no danger of any nip slips here – making this graphic novel something that I am finally comfortable allowing my 9 year old daughter to read.

And she loved it.

Here’s what she said, “I liked how Harley Quinn gave up passing the next semester to save her friends.” She also liked how each chapter focused on one character at a time. Poison Ivy was her favourite because she works with plants. I don’t have the heart to tell her that Harley and Ivy are bad guys in the main comics but in this graphic novel, Harley and Ivy are just like the other girls trying to navigate their way through superhero high school.

Class is in session! Welcome to DC Super Hero High!

It was the night before finals and the student body is hard at work…and nothing is going right! Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Harley Quinn, Batgirl and their friends are learning to become heroes, but no one knew the trials that awaited them. In the first original graphic novel from the DC Super Hero Girls line, meet the students of Superhero High School as they find out that fun, friendship and hard work are all parts of growing up!

The DC Super Hero Girls is an exciting new universe of Super Heroic storytelling that helps build character and confidence, and empowers girls to discover their true potential. Developed for girls aged 6-12, DC Super Hero Girls features DC Comics’ most powerful and diverse line-up of female characters as relatable teens, playing out across multiple entertainment content platforms and product categories to create an immersive world. Icons including Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Bumble Bee, Poison Ivy, Katana and many more make their unprecedented teenaged introduction, as each character has her own storyline that explores what teen life is like as a Super Hero.
