This episode Thomas Quince/Jonathan Pine is awake and alert and desperately trying to join the team while appearing to be too cool for whatever crap this Mallorca crowd is up to. He gets his wish and is assigned Daniel Duty, which he definitely takes advantage of. I do actually feel bad for Daniel in all of this. But I suppose we cannot choose who our parents are.
Burr and Pine
I suppose they must have a clear agenda of how to signal her and such, but it felt like the watchman who alerted that the car was on the move was dangerously close to the Roper estate. Plus, how did he even see that Pine was in it? The windows were way tinted. Anyway, I loved that sequence with the pistachio ice cream and the all the way back to ancient Egypt. Tom’s little laugh there. Swoon. And I had to laugh when Daniel tells Pine that he lost his phone and Frisky and Corky both went into high alert.
Angela Burr is sooooo wickedly resourceful though. When she pulled out the manipulation line of her apology and back rub with the guy whose daughter had killed herself at the beginning of the show, oh man. I was just “Ohhh Angela! Ruthless!”
But back to the communication aspect between the two of them. How would they have know exactly how to push out Cochran with no way to communicate yet? Seems like a particular thing to have pre-planned without really knowing the guy. But I suppose… as I drink more coffee and recall, they did have all their phone chips for 6 months. So they probably have studied rather hard.
Goodbye Corky, Hello Birch, Hang On Tight Langbourne
I loved how this went down. I actually found myself feeling bad for Corky when Frisky says the boss wants to see Pine not him. Tom Hollander is so fabulous. But the start of the demise of Langbourne is just particularly delicious. His wife definitely hit her limit. And Pine just casually confirming that she ought to tell Jed what’s really going on. Unf. I did laugh out loud when she asks him to put on the sunscreen and then says, “Don’t worry, I don’t want to sleep with you.”. Words rarely heard…
It’s hard to be certain yet if she told Jed or not the whole truth about Roper, but the trust has really been wedged between Jed and Dickie and the whole gang of them. I’m not sure how anyone getting pushed out will not immediately link it to Pine’s presence; he’d better watch his back even more now. You don’t wanna be on Corky’s bad side.
Loose Lips Sink Ships
Speaking of Jed and loose lips, what the hale is Pine doing trusting her so much?! Just because you discovered her secret child and saw her crying, does not mean you can trust her! “Hey, I’m just bringing you flowers in your shared master bedroom, also you left a strand of hair while snooping in your lover’s secret study and probably you should be more careful. I literally can only know this because I snooped myself and found the secret key and went down to the study myself to look at the farm equipment papers. So, like hopefully I can trust you.”
Pine! Sheesh. Never trust the girl who is naked all the time not to have a weakness that’s begin exploited. In fact, she already told you that no one sees her cry and you already did. What are you doing, Pine?! Don’t have flash memories of her skinny dipping in the sea while lying in bed. She’s bad news. They do have good chemistry though. Of course, Tom has good chemistry with basically everyone if he wants to, and so does Debicki. It’s not really a fair assessment.
Tobias’ Side Guy and the Plot Twist
I’m not sure this is really a plot twist, since we knew that Tobias is only cast when someone in power needs to be corrupt, but his weasly looking side guy definitely provided the excellent reveal moment. He has basically no lines in London and lots of screen time and then BAM! It wasn’t so surprising given how much they’ve built it up.
What was surprising was Rex holding his ground against Tobias. Let’s hope Rex doesn’t ruin the whole thing simply by trusting the wrong person at MI6. I wouldn’t put it past him. “We have an inside man. Wife’s cooking rabbit, gotta get going on my folding bike.” (Did anyone else watch that comedy with Lord Grantham actor about the Olympic Committee for the London Olympics? That scene 100% made me think of that show). The corruption runs deep, and clearly into Langley as well, but I wonder if anyone will recognize Pine? Hopefully Simon Ogilvy will not be back.
More Action Less Anxiety
I’m hoping next episode will have a little more action and a little less anxiety. I’m getting too anxious watching this show! And now Birch is part of the family, so they can take him into the fold, right? So far the fold seems to just be having meetings at nice restaurants and going to parties of abundance, but maybe some actual weapons will come into play soon? I’m still not certain Pine is gonna survive this. But if we can get another scene of his eight pack in motion whilst he’s running on the beach, I’m okay with a little anxiety…
