Suffice it to say I’ve been suffering from the biggest first world problem of all, a TV slump. Then Amazon released the second season of Catastrophe and the heavens opened up. Slump broken. They’re the humane growth hormone supplier to my metaphorical Peyton Manning.
Here are three reasons you should be watching Catastrophe on Amazon.
1. It’s hilarious
No really, it’s hilarious. I haven’t laughed out loud at a show like this since the third season of Arrested Development when they were about to be canceled and just completely gave up the pretense of trying. In its first season Catastrophe navigated the relationship of Sharon (Sharon Horgan) and Rob (Rob Delaney), an Irish and American couple who got pregnant after a few wild nights as strangers in London. Its second season focuses on the ways their lives have changed since adding a second baby to the mix.
That’s not to say that this is a cutesy family show. These characters are flawed, sometimes unlikable, oftentimes sweet, always filthy, and undeniably realistic. If you can watch Rob tell Sharon that the only way he’d cheat on her is with a professional without laughing then we can’t be friends.
2. Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan are Perfection
Thanks to the lovely world of social media we get the joy of stalking our favorite actors in real time not just through the JTT’s fanclub address found in the back of Bop Magazine. Not that I’m speaking from personal experience or anything; I can’t break the no contact order. Oftentimes the real lives of our favorite actors don’t live up to their onscreen personas which is fine, that’s acting. It’s what they’re paid to do. But Rob and Sharon are possibly even funnier “in real life”. I highly recommend reading Rob’s twitter feed where he masterfully trolls conservative presidential candidates.
3. The Supporting Cast
While Rob and Sharon’s hysterical interactions are the main draw (I’m still laughing at Rob calling Sharon “Gollum” for how she stares at their baby) the supporting characters are equally funny. There’s Carrie Fisher playing the Mother-in-Law from hell who tells post-partum Sharon that her baby looks like Gene Wilder. Then there’s “separated until their son turns 18” Fran and Chris who roshambo for who has to attend baby showers in-between chain vaping outside gay bars. Plus, TN favorite Tobias Menzies makes guest appearances as an OBGYN in both seasons with scenes that I are so funny I don’t even want to spoil them for you.
Check out this trailer for Catastrophe and then binge watch both seasons on Amazon Prime so you can laugh as hard as I did.
