Tom in anything is of course exciting, but it sounds like he’ll be the protagonist, Jonathan Pine, a former British soldier turned night auditor at a luxury hotel. Not that he’ll be in uniform here, as he’s playing an undercover spy most of the story, but in case you forgot what Tom playing the good guy British soldier looks like:
Opposite Tom will be Hugh Laurie, back to TV after his departure from House in 2012. It will be fun to see him again, especially since his character, a weapons black marketeer named Richard Onslow Roper, sounds complex and dark. The plot calls for a beautiful French-Arab woman to connect the two men through her intelligence on Roper. Hopefully they’ll cast her well, even if she does have to be murdered in order to trigger Pine to seek vengeance against Roper.
The plot gets a lot thicker after that, including Pine falling in love with Roper’s consort Jed. I’m seriously pulling for some Tom slash that’s sexier than this was (aka lacking a sexual assault vibe):
Besides the challenge of figuring out how to get this for home viewing (since it’s apparently only airing on BBC as of now), I’m actually most excited for the screenwriter, David Farr. He co-wrote Hanna with Joe Wright (yes, Joe Wright of Pride & Prejudice Matthew Macfadyen version) and if you’ve never seen Hanna, you should go rent it right now. It’s one of my favorite films. Farr is mostly known for being an Associate Director at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) as well as a playwright, and I have a feeling his adaptation is going to be excellent.
Espionage, great writing, and Tom Hiddleston?
*sings* These are a few of my favorite things…
