Supernatural, a story about two brothers battling demons, ghosts, and monsters, will premiere its tenth season this week. The show is headlined by Jared Padalecki, playing Sam Winchester, and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester. Here are my Top 10 favorite moments from Seasons 1 through 9.
10) Sam’s fear of clowns. Season 2, Episode 2.
This episode was super tough because it was preceded by the death of John Winchester. Not only did their dad die tragically, he died sacrificing himself to save Dean. In the tradition of Winchester emotional trauma, the boys keep everything on the inside and throw themselves into the family business of saving people, killing things. Sam’s coulrophobia gave everybody a little well-timed comic relief.
Dean: You still bust out crying whenever you see Ronald McDonald on the television.
Sam: At least I’m not afraid of flying.
Dean: Planes crash.
Sam: And apparently clowns kill!
9) The ode to fanfiction. Season 4, Episode 18.
In this episode the Winchesters are introduced to a prophet that conveniently writes fictional books detailing the lives of two demon-slaying brothers. I know … it’s weird. Strangely though, the idea works and is one of many nods to the fandemonium backing the series.
8) Jensen Ackles sings ‘Eye of the Tiger.’ Season 4, Episode 6.
This clip was actually an outtake from the episode. The whole hour, titled ‘Yellow Fever,’ was equally hilarious what with Dean screaming hysterically every five seconds when he contracts “ghost sickness.”
7) Dean does it doggy-style. Season 9, Episode 5.
Long story short, Dean turns into a dog. Hilarity ensues.
6) Groundhog Day done right. Season 3, Episode 11.
Where Supernatural truly excels is meshing comedy and horror together, and very often the real horror is seeded in the brothers’ near constant fear of losing one another. In this episode, Sam has to relive Dean’s death over and over at the hands of one of the show’s fan favorite villains, The Trickster.
5) A little murder with my mistletoe. Season 3, Episode 8.
Not only did this episode introduce us to, literally, the scariest couple ever imagined but we also share a low-key holiday celebration with our boys complete with beer, football and gas station purchased gifts. The flashbacks of Christmas past also serve up a lethal dose of foreshadowing.
4) The moment it all began. Season 1, Episode 1.
I think Supernatural has arguably the best pilot episode I’ve ever seen. It is creepy as hell and I was seriously invested in these two dudes lives from the minute I saw little Dean kissing baby Sammy in his crib.
3) Dean’s version of heaven. Season 5, Episode 16.
In a nutshell, our boys die in this episode. Of course, they don’t really die die, but rather are sent to heaven so that a couple of angels can teach them a lesson. The brothers must work through a series of “memories” to come back to the land of the living. My absolute favorite is when Dean celebrates a 4th of July with adorable little Sammy.
The song ‘Knockin on Heaven’s Door’ is iconic of brotherly love throughout the series. It first appeared in Season 2, Episode 13, during a moment that pulls at all your heartstrings.
Dean to Sam: I’m watchin’ out for you.
2) I hate it when they fight! Season 8, Episode 23.
No, no, no! Don’t say those horrible things Sammy! Don’t you dare say them! Oh my god, you guys, this scene. The brothers fighting, then making up, all hell breaking loose, angels falling from heaven by the droves … WHAT?!? It’s been two years and I still can’t speak comprehensibly about it.
Tied for 2) Dean dies, but comes back as a demon. Season 9, Episode 23.
It’s no secret the Winchesters have a tendency to die in season finales. I’m here to tell you that it still hurts. every. time. Especially when Dean drops lines like, “I’m proud of us,” to his really scared little brother. #criedlikeababy
1) Last but not least, the epic swan song. Season 5, Episode 22.
Season 5 had the finale to end all finales. Not only was it the end of a story arc five years in the making, but also it was the last episode with show runner Eric Kripke at the helm. Pretty much all the major characters die or get beat to a bloody pulp, there is a sentimental montage, and – because of Kripke’s exit – fans had no clue if there was going to be a Season 6. It was freakin’ brutal.
So there you go, ten of my favorite moments to get you ready for the Supernatural season 10 premiere, airing Tuesday 9/8c on the CW.

I know there are so many more awesome moments in the show: Bobby calling the boys “Idgets,” the time Sam wore a sleeveless shirt and posed as a yoga instructor, Castiel yelling, “Hey, Ass-butt!” Shout out all your favorites in the comments below!
