This is really the last straw for me and John Mayer.
I’ve defended him many, probably too many times before. Jamie posted her opinion about this music video and at first I was like, “hey, give these two a break.”
Then I actually watched the video, and wretched. While I stand by my love of his latest album, this music video for “Who You Love” is just too eye roll-worthy to bear. I have so many questions, and no answers.
- Why are couples riding a mechanical bull?
- Why is some of it in slow motion?
- Why are we being subjected to this?
.
I went to a John Mayer concert a few weeks ago, and genuinely enjoyed it. Room for Squares was the first album I was ever really obsessed with, and I listened to it straight through over and over again during the impressionable time between ages 12-14. So John Mayer may have had a profound impact on my ideas about love. And yes, I do feel shame about that.
During the concert, he said, more or less: “I really appreciate you guys, because I know you get a lot of shit for liking my music, but I hope I can make that a little easier for you.”
The man is a liar. This just made it so much harder.
Not only does the video have the strangest concept – couples on a mechanical bull together, which is obviously a metaphor…? But the nauseating nose-nuzzling is just yuck. It unfathomably focuses on John Mayer’s biggest problem: his creepy face contortion and rape-y eyes. This is the music video version of a friend who won’t stop posting kissy photo shoots of her and her boyfriend on Facebook. This is classic John Mayer icky over share.
We get it. JM + KP = love forever. It’s a deep, epic love with confetti and pyrotechnics. Eyeroll.
I give up on John Mayer, I really do probably. I mean, I’m listening to his album as I write this, so I guess I’m just choosing to separate the art from the artist. But definitely no more defending him. This is an intervention on myself.

The moral of this is that John Mayer is wrong, you don’t “love who you love” – make good celebrity boyfriend choices.
But onto the next crush, someone who will hopefully not eventually shame me into publicly disowning him. Good luck Katy Perry, at least your hair looked really cute in this video.
Have you ever made a bad choice in celebrity boyfriend?
