I’ve watched two summer tv pilots, as well as SYTYCD, and so far, there’s at least one new show I’m going to watch for the summer.
Motive on ABC
Last night, I saw the premiere of Motive, a new ABC procedural. It was your basic cop show with a small twist. In the first few minutes of the crime set-up, there’s a–labelled–freeze-frame of the killer and the victim. The hot, blonde detective (played by Kristin Lehman) tries to solve the crime. The viewer already knows who did it, and is watching to try to piece together the killer’s motive.
I’m not really a cop-show, procedural type of girl. However, I was entertained by Motive and could see how it would appeal to a lot of other people. It had its funny moments, like when Lehman’s character caught her teenage son with a shirtless-but-still-wearing-a-bra teenage girl and asked her “Are those [boobs] real?” She answered “No, they were my birthday present. Want to see?” and Lehman’s character replied “Yes. No. How much did they cost? Nevermind.” Epic parenting right there, let me tell you.
The Goodwin Games
The other pilot I saw was Fox’s The Goodwin Games on Monday. In this show, three estranged siblings return home after the death of their father, planning to make an appearance at his funeral and get back to their lives, only to find out that their father has left them a $23 million inheritance. The catch? They have to compete in The Goodwin Games (a series of tasks set up by their late father to help them reconnect with who they used to be) to get it.
This show isn’t going to be the next Friends or the next How I Met Your Mother (although it has the same executive producers as the latter). But it was cute and funny and will tide me over until The Big Bang Theory comes back to meet me sitcom needs. Plus, it gave me the chance to amaze my husband with my capacity to remember completely useless information when Scott Foley (who plays the oldest Goodwin sibling) came on screen. “Hey, babe, he was in Felicity! And he was Jennifer’s Garner’s first husband.” My husband couldn’t have cared less about Noel/Hollywood star’s exes. He was mildly interested in why my brain can immediately produce those facts but can’t remember the schedule decisions we discussed at length that morning.
I’m not going to recap So You Think You Can Dance for you. Mainly because it’s still airing the seemingly-endless and mostly-boring audition shows. And secondly, because if you don’t already understand the appeal of a show where you can count ab muscles or secretly pretend contestants aren’t gay, you’re never going to.
Did anyone else watch these shows? If so, what did you think? Anyone else struck with nostalgia for Felicity, Young Americans, and other WB shows, or is that just me? Any other summer TV you’re excited about?
