Setting Expectations – Girl Meets World

in on 01/30/13 by Jamie 6 Comments

I, like any girl who hit puberty in the 90s, was super excited to hear the old gang from Boy Meets World was getting back together for a spinoff. These kids were around the same age as me when the show was on and the show supposedly took place in Philadelphia. There were Phillies jerseys galore in each episode and kids were wearing those in my middle school too! I appreciated the awkward girl talk and the camaraderie between friends. I crushed on Cory’s ditzy older brother Eric and I had a slight crush on Shawn Hunter until I realized he would just stay short. And BOY did I love when Jack was introduced on the show [Side note: my friends and I used to talk about driving around the Lawrence brother’s neighborhood to spot them (not stalk them) when we got our licenses. Sadly, we lost commitment by the time 16 rolled around]

If you scour Ew.com as much as I do, you saw the news that Cory and Topanga’s daughter for the spinoff, Girl Meets World, has been cast. Meet the yet to be named daughter played by Rowan Blanchard:

I began to imagine what the future shows may look like and in my day dream haze, it occurred to me: wait, this show is going to be about this kid. I mean, I knew there would be a daughter, but it suddenly made me realize that this would not be a continuation of the show we knew and loved; this is going to be a show about the yet-to-be named daughter.  Hold the phone, THIS SHOW IS NOT GOING TO FOLLOW AROUND TOPANGA AND CORY AS THEY NAVIGATE MARRIAGE, LOVE, FAMILY, FRIENDSHIPS, CAREERS, AND PARENTHOOD. This show is going to follow this girl and maybe T&C get 10 minutes of screen time per episode, if that. I spiraled from there:

  • We learned through Rider Strong (Best Name EVER) that he’s open to being on the show, but nothing is definite. How can we have the ultimate bromance without Cory and Shawn??

bromance

  • How often will we really see my crush, Will Friedle (besides hearing him as every cartoon character of the past decade?) He made such a great weatherman.
  •  How many sweet Topanga/Cory moments will we really get outside of maybe the first episode? (I imagine, they’ll give us at least one for old times sake in the Pilot). We already missed all the awkward possible jokes about the size of Topanga’s boobies while preggers. There could have been so so many possibilities with some many characters.

In the end, we adults will have to come to terms with the fact that this new show will be for the next generation. Those prepubescent kids, starting to sprout boobs, dealing with hard-core crushes, learning to do the right thing…this will be the show for them. But hey, we can always catch old episodes on Abc Family. Set your DVRs.

Will you watch Girl Meets World? Who did you crush on in the original? Should I have stalked down Joey and Matthew Lawrence?
