So what’s The Boyband Con? Well, I’ll tell you! Lance Bass from NSYNC produced a documentary featuring other boy band members discussing the rise and fall of Lou Pearlman, the former impresario of groups like Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, and apparently the guy behind a half billion dollar ponzi scheme.
The Boy Band Con: The Lou Pearlman Story is a documentary feature that tells the story of famed boy band impresario Lou Pearlman. The film tracks his life from his childhood in Queens, through discovering mega-bands *NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys, and chronicles his later life, including his perpetration of one of the largest Ponzi schemes in American history. This is the first time this story has ever been told from the perspective of the people involved, from the Boy Band members themselves, to Ponzi scheme investors to Lou’s childhood friends. Interviewees include : Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick (NSYNC), AJ McLean (Backstreet Boys), Aaron Carter and Ashley Parker Angel (OTown).

While watching The Boy Band Con, I was reminded of several things:
.
NSYNC Used To Look Like This:
So many lolz
.
Lance’s Mom, Diane Has The Best Accent
And I really want to look through her 85 (!!!!) scrapbooks of NSYNC memorabilia. SHARE DIANE, I’M DYING TO REMINISCE!
.
Aaron Carter Is Still A Freakshow
If Aaron’s frequent appearances in the tabloids, mugshots, and TMZ wasn’t sad enough… at one point during The Boy Band Con, Aaron becomes incredibly defensive when asked if Lou was every predatory or made any sexual advances and he become so incredibly defensive and then upset to the point of crying, it came off as if he was hiding something. Poor dude.
.
Where was Joey?
I can understand Justin Timberlake not appearing cause he never comes through for these things (his mom Lynn, is featured tho!) but Joey Fatone aka the voice (not the host) of The Family Feud will show up for just about anything. His lack of exposure in the piece was odd to me and even odder when I saw he did press for the premiere of the documentary. What was he doing?!
.
The BSB vs NSYNC Feud Was Kinda Real?
While I was ALWAYS an NSYNC girl, and appreciated their musicality, shows, and music more than Backstreet, I never knew it was kind of a real thing going on behind the scenes. And of course it was probably Lou’s marketing mind at work, but he planted the seeds within each group that they didn’t like each other and that they should NOT like each other. There are clips in the Boy Band Con of members of both NSYNC and Backstreet talking about how they didn’t like each other because Lou was whispering lies to them. What a wild ride!
.
Lou Deserved Everything He Got And More
As an NSYNC fan, I knew quite a lot about the legal proceedings around NSYNC’s departure from Transcontinental Records and Lou Pearlman, and that he ended up in jail. But I did not know just how deep Lou’s scheming and illegal activities went. Lou ending up behind bars because of the ponzi scheme he ran that bilked investors (usually older people) out of money to the tune of approximately half a BILLION dollars! And that most of those elderly investors will never see that money again. Anyone who preys on the elderly deserves a reserved seat in hell. Disgusting.
.
If you are a fan of boy bands, loved NSYNC or Backstreet, of just love watching a ponzi scheme or MLM crumble, then watch The Boy Band Con, it’s an insightful look inside some of the twentieth century’s most popular music and the machine that created and then tried to break them.
