Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway Battle Gender Bias in “The Hustle”

in Movies on 05/10/19 by Emily Leave a Comment

The Hustle opens in theaters today and is a remake of 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. That’s not what makes it special. Sure, both are about con “people.” But in 1988 it was Steve Martin and Michael Caine going after an heiress for $50k and that was even turned into a Broadway musical. But now Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson team up to take down the men who have wronged them.

The Hustle Trailer

Setting Things Right

The movie looks funny and it’s rated PG-13. It originally however, received an R rating. Here’s what you might not know. Before becoming an actress, Rebel Wilson was an attorney. And when the MPAA came down with the R rating she was not happy. She actually tells the story the best on Graham Norton. This is what makes it special. Rebel is not just a rebel, she’s a badass.

Gender Bias Double Standard

This might not be your cup of tea but to stick it to the MPAA for those reasons alone I’d go. Gender Bias is nothing new. We’ve all seen it, Our paychecks probably see it every pay day. But when you’re a woman trying to make it in the world there are times you have to work a little harder.

Gender Bias of Another Sort

(*Warning* you might consider this NSFW*)

Every January the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) happens in Las Vegas. And the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) an arm of CES awards a Robotics Innovation Award each year. While scrolling through Tumblr last night I found out that this year the Innovation Awards Honoree in the Robotics and Drone product category prize went to a sex toy for women. It was created by a team of women engineers and a women owned company. But almost as quickly as they won, the CTA revoked the award saying the entry violated the terms and conditions of their entries deeming it “immoral, obscene, indecent, or profane.”

CEO and Founder of Osé, Lora DiCarlo issued an Open Letter  “… if we didn’t fit their policy, how in the world did our application even get past the first round of vetting by CTA staff, let alone receive high marks across the board from their expert judges?” And it’s true, how did it? Beyond this, if you’ve never been to CES, you should know that Virtual Reality companies exhibit every year allowing men to watch porn in public as people just walk by. Think about the trade show floor at Comic-Con? And in in 2018 an actual sex doll was launched by a company on the floor.

Clearly there is a double standard about whose sexual pleasure is allowed to be winning awards or be on display. On May 8, the CTA saw the error of their ways reinstated the award. Osé and their very fancy women’s health sex toy is once again top of the pack in Robotics Innovation. CTA issued a statement saying they didn’t “handle this award properly” and that “This prompted some important conversations internally.” Ya’think? Lora found only 1 out of 100 CES Best Innovation Award winners were female founded. You can read more about Lora’s fight on Gender Bias at CES here.  If you’re interested, Osé will be available in the fall and you can find more info here.

Go see the film and don’t let there be a double standard.
