Netflix This: The Umbrella Academy

in Netflix on 02/21/19 by Emily Leave a Comment

With no shortage of comic book to TV or film adaptations competing for our attention from DC or Marvel, the latest offering Netflix brings to the table from Dark Horse Comics is The Umbrella Academy. It dropped on Friday and I spent part of my three-day weekend binging this amazingly cast 10-episode drama.

The Premise

Watch the trailer to understand how this rag tag bunch of orphans all end up being adopted by an eccentric man and forming The Umbrella Academy.

The show starts off when the estranged adult Hargreeve children return to the home they grew up in for their adoptive father’s funeral. Over the ten episodes you’re going to grow to love and hate the seven siblings and by the time it’s over, I wanted more! And can’t wait to see where the series will go from here!

The Cast

Who isn’t in this? Ellen Page is fantastic Vanya the one with out powers. Tom Hopper who you know from Black Sails, Game of Thrones, and Sam Heughan’s new film SAS: Red Notice. Robert Sheehan you may recognize from BBC’s Misfits or the film adaptation of Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Up-and-comers include David Castaneda who you’ve seen in Sicario or Jane the Virgin and Aidan Gallagher who I can’t tell how old he is but carries this show like no other. Kate Walsh from Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice even makes an appearance.

Not new acting but perhaps new names in the TV world , Mary J. Blige shows up as an assassin and Emmy Raver-Lampman who was in the touring cast of Hamilton that I saw where she played Angelica Schyler.

The Soundtrack is amazing

You can listen on Spotify here and it even includes 80’s throwback of Tiffany’s I Think We’re Alone Now which is one of my favorite parts of episode one. Watch below, you’ll see what I mean.

CHILDREN! Behave. @UmbrellaAcad is now streaming and this exclusive scene is perhaps the purest dance party of all time. pic.twitter.com/LBgQbUjomr

So, where am I going with this? What I’m saying is, you have to watch this show! Check it out on Netflix! I’m hoping Hotel Oblivion will be up next and I can’t wait to see where it goes!
