In 2018, Netflix officially beat the 17-year-long run HBO enjoyed when it comes to Emmy nominations, receiving 112 in 2018, so you know you’re going to have a lot to choose from. You bought one of the Dallas homes for sale, moved everything in and things are finally getting settled. Now it’s time to enjoy a little relaxation, and perhaps watching one of the top shows on Netflix.
These shows are all great options to look out for this year.
Stranger Things Season 3
There’s a reason why everyone is talking about “Stranger Things,” the nostalgic sci-fi series that will return for its third outing on the Fourth of July. If you haven’t watched, it’s time to binge on Season 1 and 2 so that you can be prepared for the third season of this brilliant horror series. Set in fictional Hawkins, Indiana, it follows four regular kids and one telekinetic super-girl in the 1980s. It instantly became a phenomenon with a fantastic plot and an incredibly talented ensemble of child stars.
Umbrella Academy
Available in February, this is Netflix’s new youth superhero series. It’s about seven kids, all born under circumstances that are rather mysterious before a billionaire adopts them and trains them to “save the world.” Years later after the death of their “father,” the members who still survive hope to fulfill their purpose with the possibility of an apocalyptic future looming. It’s based on Gerard Way’s graphic novels and comic books and the early reviews have been quite promising.
Peaky Blinders
With four seasons under its belt, “Peaky Blinders” is consistently named one of the top shows on Netflix. Season 5 will hit in 2019, though the specific date is yet to be announced. The crime epic starring Cillian Murphy is one to watch out for, winning acclaim from around the world. After Tommy Shelby (Murphy) returns home from the war, he attempts to expand his family’s control of Birmingham, stealing a shipment of guns so that his gang will have the upper hand in the dark world of crime. The cinematography is spectacular, and the story is fast-paced, keeping the audience on the edge as it follows Tommy and his family complete stellar performances, sharp suits and even sharper razor blades.
Larry Charles’ Dangerous World of Comedy
If you’re looking for something meaningful among the darkness, “Larry Charles’ Dangerous World of Comedy” is a reality series that will premiere on February 15. The iconic comedy producer/director/writer Larry Charles (best known for his collaborations with Larry David and Sacha Baron Cohen) travels the globe looking for humor in unsuspecting and sometimes dangerous places. From Turkey, Nigeria and Russia to Iran, India, China and beyond, he travels to some of the unlikeliest spots, unearthing how meaningful, and dangerous, the world of comedy can be, as its official logline states. The first episode takes the audience to Iraq and Liberia, seeking out war survivors who’ve suffered painful personal losses to learn how they’ve been able to use comedy as a healing tool, not only for themselves but for their societies.
