Sex Education on Netflix is Horny, Hilarious, and Heartfelt

in TV on 01/22/19 by Leanne Leave a Comment

Masturbation, homosexuality, boobs, erections, abortion, and erotic art. Are you still with me? If these topics make you uncomfortable, then Sex Education on Netflix is probably not for you. However if you regularly follow us at That’s Normal you will probably be okay with the show’s content. A word of warning, don’t watch it with the littles around, this show is very mature.

Well, the characters are not necessarily mature but the content certainly is. With unblinking frankness, Sex Education tackles the world of teen hormones, relationships and of course shagging (it takes place in England). I even learned a new term while watching the series.

Otis

Asa Butterfield (The Space Between Us) is Otis Milburn. Considering he is the son of two sex therapists, Otis is a bit repressed in terms of his comfort level with his own penis. Despite his lack of experience with the ladies, or even with his own member, he is full of knowledge that could be helpful to his peers. And man do they need help.

Maeve

Beautiful and broke, Maeve (Emma Mackey in her first major role) realizes Otis’s depth of knowledge could be a big money maker. By scheduling “clinic” appointments for their classmates, Maeve lines up “clients” for Otis to assist.

Their problems run the gamut from lack of orgasm to gagging during oral sex to just getting a girl to say yes to a date. As expected with teens, emotions and hormones play a vital role in their issues and could get Otis and Maeve into some sticky (um, bad pun) situations.

Eric

Otis’s gay best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) brings both fun and heart to the series. Eric is figuring out who he wants to be as a gay youth who is part of a very traditional family in a small English town.

Gillian the Cougar

Gillian Anderson is a platinum bombshell as Otis’s mother Jean.

Given her enlightened mind and free spirit, it’s odd that she plays a role in her son’s discomfort with his own sexuality.

It’s kind of like American Pie with a British accent

Overall the series is pretty hilarious given the exploits of both the students and at least one adult mentioned above. Not shying away from tough topics, an episode dealing with abortion is handled with care, incorporating both surprisingly lighthearted and poignant moments. Self acceptance is a common theme throughout the series and moments of depth and amusement are backed by a soundtrack that spans decades. Music from Billy Idol, Muddy Waters, The Psychedelic Furs and many more are featured in the show as well as original music by Ezra Furman.

There is no word yet as to whether there will be a season 2 but the fans are begging for it. Begging for more episodes that is.

Sex Education is streaming now on Netflix.
