The positive aspects of the show end there. The characters are insufferable, selfish, whiny, entitled rich people who screw up their own lives constantly and have zero sense that the world doesn’t revolve entirely around them.
SO WHY IN GOD’S NAME CAN’T I STOP WATCHING?!?
WHAT THE ACTUAL EFF ARE YOU DOING
I have been known to love shows where the characters self-sabotage (see: Skins), but this takes it to a whole other level. Decades-long affair! Potential life-altering secrets! A massively toxic friend group that only encourages each other’s worst qualities! Any sort of redeeming action by anyone immediately backfires and makes everything worse.
Without spoiling this clusterf*ck of a show for you, at the end of season 1, secrets are revealed and everything blows up for most of the characters.
So, going into season 2, being the experienced television watcher that I am, I expected some sort of resolution or character development.
LOLOLOLOL NOPE.
If it’s possible, everyone becomes even WORSE and screws up even MORE. To the point where you may end up yelling at your TV or shaking your tablet.
I suppose it is a tribute to the acting on the show that they can pull out a believable performance out of characters that are such horrible people. You can’t empathize with the characters one bit, but they are actually feasible as the worst humans ever (with the exception of Max, played by Fred Savage, who is just totally clueless to how much his friends suck and how much they bring him down).
BLESS YOU, BILLY EICHNER, VOICE OF REASON
I adore Billy Eichner under pretty much all circumstances, but I particularly love him and his character, Felix, on this show. Why? BECAUSE HE’S THE ONLY ONE WHO MAKES SENSE!
Felix has zero tolerance for this friend group and their drama, immaturity, and complete lack of consideration for other people.
Most endearing, he has little to no patience with this friend group and how they treat his partner, Max. As mentioned before, Max is the only somewhat decent human being in this group of idiots. So Max lets the gang walk all over him, take credit for his successes, and generally treat him like crap. Felix stands up for him, takes care of him, and they have the most normal relationship in the show (which is not saying much in this pile of dysfunction). He calls the crowd out on all their bullshit.
Billy Eichner brings his intense charm to the role, and he has the best way of describing the motley crew of Friends From College.
Two words: epic shitshow.
I LOVE YOU, BUT YOU’RE BRINGING ME DOWN
Maybe I keep watching all the terrible “friends” (are you really friends if you treat each other like utter shit?) on this show for a life lesson. It reminds me that if you hang around people who bring you down, this kind of crap happens. Sure, old friends CAN be great, but if they can’t behave as if they are older than nineteen…then it might be time to move on.
