Rest Up!
Episode 1 covers topics related to our lousy sleep habits and how tired many of us are. It’s a worldwide epidemic but ironically, I found this episode to be a bit sleepy.
Heating up the Documentary
Caulfield explores how sex and relationships are important parts of staying healthy. Loneliness kills! Or at least shortens your life span. This episode includes a visit to a Cuddle Cafe where people get snuggles for health and examines how even toys (some more realistic than others) can help fulfill the human need for companionship.
You Put What Where?
Episode 5 “Body Hacking” was particularly eye opening. I had no idea how many people have RFIDs implanted in their bodies. Yeah, these things.
I microchipped my dog at the vet’s office, but people are implanting RFIDs into themselves at home, risking infection and who knows what else in an attempt to be keyless, wallet-less or just for the little electronic sensations they get from them.
Transhumanists are also highlighted in this episode. Transhumanism is a movement where people seek to prolong life, by enhancing their bodies through science and technology, beyond the current physical and mental limitations that eventually lead to death. There are a surprising number of people out there who desire to live forever, even if it means replacing body part by body part as they wear out. Fascinating and terrifying.
The Ewww and the Om
Not all germs are created equal, and not all “natural” supplements are natural. Season 2’s investigations into germs, vitamins, supplements, and spiritual healing practices had me second guessing a few things I’ve been putting in my body and exploring meditation for the first time in my life. Not easy for a type A personality like myself. Overall, A User’s Guide to Cheating Death: Season 2, is even more thought provoking and stimulating than season 1.
