ICYMI: “Hit the 5 senses with Bekah’s Musts” are my quick and dirty list of things I’m watching, listening to, tasting, touching and smelling. Catch up on what I was into last year here!
And get excited for some new things:
Must See (Must Watch)
Big Mouth on Netflix
Omg you guys. Binge this show immediately. The first season came out on Netflix last Fall and the second season started last month. It’s created and voiced by comedy veterans, the likes of John Mulaney, Nick Kolloll, Maya Rudolph and Jordan Peele, and is based on Nick Kroll and creator Andrew Goldberg’s teenage years growing up in Westchester County, New York.
It follows the lives of a few 7th graders, experiencing crushes, hormones, acne, periods and boners for the first time. Lots and lots of boners.
The cringe-worthy awkwardness of the 7th graders experiences will remind you of that first time you felt IT through the pants of that boy dancing too close during homecoming. Jessi’s first period while wearing white shorts (of course) will take you back to YOUR first period, and you’ll be cheering her on when she finally says “hello” to her vagina (voiced by Kristin Wiig). (Oh yeah, this is all animated.)
Watching this show with my boyfriend has given us plenty of opportunities to discuss first wet dreams, first awkward kisses, if boys really masturbate for that many hours a day (true), and if the ‘hormone monster’ ever made me say something really regrettable to my mom (true). It also gave him the opportunity to refuse to let me set an alarm for “7 minutes” so I could FINALLY experience 7 minutes in heaven. WHO WOULDN’T WANT OT KISS ME IN OUR TINY CITY CLOSET FOR 7 MINUTES?
Must Hear (must Listen)
Slow Burn Season 2
We are all about Podcasts around here, and it feels like we give you a new recommendation every day. But the one I’m currently binging is Slate’s Slow Burn Season 2 which covers everything about the Bill Clinton, Monica Lewinsky scandal and the Clinton Impeachment.
Chances are, a good majority of you were too young to remember anything other than what your parents told you about the scandal. Or if you were old enough, you experienced the scandal in the 90s, not today. It is FASCINATING to hear the details of how everything went down from a 2018 perspective. (The narrator and journalist is a guy in his mid-thirties, like me). It’s horrifying to realize how Monica was treated. I have much more to say about this in my apology letter drafted to Monica, but for now I’ll say, listen to Slate’s Slow Burn Season 2. And when thinking about where we are TODAY vs. where we were in 1994, try not to scream at the hypocrisy of our politicians, BOTH political parties (and mostly, the Christian right).
Must Taste
Wine-poached Seared Salmon
After a week of carb-loading, pie eating and binge drinking (red wine for me!), I am craving a whole, balanced, clean meal. My favorite go-to is this Salmon recipe from Sprouted Kitchen.
It is SO simple (and the salad is amazing too) and the salmon is cooked perfectly every time.
Here is what I do:
1. Dry both sides of the salmon and cover it with garlic salt, pepper and basil (I like to use the Lemon Pepper from Trader Joe’s)
2. Heat a sauce pan over medium with a little bit of oil
3. Add the salmon filets so that the sear on one side. Let them cook for about 5 minutes.
4. Flip the salmon, sear for just another minute and then add 1/2 cup of white wine to the pan (I use whatever I have!).
5. Cover the pan and cook until cooked through. Usually about another 5 minutes.
I like to serve this with simple sides like jasmine rice and broccoli. Does the trick EVERY time!
Must Touch
Everything from Parachute Home
I first fell in love with Parachute’s bedding over Instagram a few years ago. And then I started buying their products. I own a comforter and pillow coverings. plus the world’s best shower curtain, and I covet most everything else.
This is the quilt I own (and have ruined with bleach from my skin product)
And this is the world’s best shower curtain.
Everything they make is classic, simple, and high quality.

Must Smell
My perfume
I’m hesitating in telling you about this next one because I love being in on this secret. And now that I’m spilling it, I bet the whole world finds out, it sells out, it becomes too expensive, or worse- Urban Outfitters starts carrying it. But my perfume is the best smelling perfume in the history of the world:
Maison Louis Marie No. 4 Perfume Oil
My fav local shop stopped carrying the spray bottle and instead just has a roller oil. I was skeptical at first, but I love it. It sinks into the skin and just smells decadent.
I can’t describe it to you, that’s like me trying to describe wine, but just know that I get so many compliments when wearing it.
No. 4 – this unisex scent is a sandalwood fragrance with a dominant cedarwood and sandalwood accord supplemented by a cinnamon nutmeg complex with an earthy vetiver note. held in a glass bottle with roller ball application
If you’re looking for a new scent, track down this brand and check out what they have to offer. I’m in love!
That’s it! That’s a check in with the 5 Senses and Bekah’s Musts for now!
