But today’s podcast recommendation is a little different.
The Shadows from CBC is a podcast unlike anything I’ve listened to. It’s a fictional story (though… I’d venture to guess it follows some stories form the narrator and writer Kaitlin Crest’s real life!!) about the nuances of a love relationship from start to finish. It’s an audio journey through first crush to first kiss to first f*ck to, finally, falling out of love.
And when I say audio journey, I truly mean it. This isn’t just a narrative story. It’s a deeply woven artful audio piece with characters and sound effects and music and truly intimate thoughts and moments and, well, sounds!
The Shadows follows Kaitlin Prest, an artist sand puppeteer living in Montrose, Canada, just north of the New York border. Kaitlin “believes that the love depicted in Hollywood movies is real and that she will be one of the lucky ones to find it “

Kaitlin is annoying in the way that that weird, quirky girl from high school who thought she was sooo much better than you and was, at art, is weird. She’s anti-establishment. She’s queer. She’s an accordion playing, puppeteer who revels in her weirdness.
And then there’s Charlie. Charlie is traditionally handsome, he makes MONEY from being a puppeteer and he’s straight in the way that queer people hate. And yes, Kaitlin, queer herself, falls in love with him.
This story is best listened to with headphones. As Kaitlin, the podcast creator, narrates the story, you hear Kaitlin and Charlie, the fictional puppeteers, in the background. You hear them flirting. You hear their thoughts. You hear them kissing. You hear them… f*cking. I mean REALLY hear them. It’s porn for the ears. It’s awkward (if you’re in a public place). I’s beautiful. It’s hot.
The Shadows is frustrating. You will hate the characters. You will relate to them. You will root for them.
The Shadows is 6 episode audio fiction from CBC Podcasts. It is “is a story about the anatomy of a relationship: a crush, a choice, a resentment and an end.” Listen to it immediately!
