That’s right. I have a celebrity best friend wish list. How does one earn such a coveted honor that’s practically on par with an Academy Award nomination? What is my vetting process? So glad you asked:
- Doesn’t annoy the shit out of me. (Please see Flo from Progressive or Senator Susan Collins.)
- Wouldn’t judge me if I ate bread or drank a margarita.
- Be a decent human being with a soul and an average to above average IQ.
Although this wish list has long been established and rarely is modified, it’s time to add someone new. Someone who meets all my criteria. Someone who makes me want to hold weekly brunches just so that I can invite her over to my house. Who is this magical human being?
Busy Philipps
Whether you remember her from Freaks and Geeks or Cougar Town, religiously follow her Instagram, devoured her recently released memoir This Will Only Hurt a Little in one day, or have already set your DVR for her new talk show Busy Tonight, Busy Philipps has slowly evolved into the celebrity you wish you could set as one of your Favorites in your iPhone.
Here’s just some of the reasons why Busy Philipps is your new celebrity best friend:
She’s Real and Brutally Honest
And I mean about EVERYTHING.
There are just some people who aren’t afraid to tell it like it is, and it’s clear that Busy is one of those people.
She was one of the first actresses to publicly call out James Franco for being a bag of dicks to her on the set of Freaks and Geeks. Although the two have since reconciled, she confirmed what we all pretty much suspected – like his published poetry, James Franco is a human dumpster fire.
She doesn’t just blow the whistle on others.
Busy Phillips has been honest about her own sexual assault and mental health, insecurities as a mother, and problems in her marriage. In an interview with Parents Magazine, the actress and author opened up about her struggles and how she stays afloat:
“I live to make sure everyone is happy, but I also make sure I’m taking care of my own mental health. I see a therapist. I work out almost every day because cardio knocks out my anxiety. It makes me happy when I spend time with friends and see bands, so I do that. Occasionally, I watch TV, but even that can feel overwhelming. I can’t keep up with all the new shows. That’s why I stick with Friends and Seinfeld reruns. They soothe me.”
Self-soothing with Friends? Busy Philipps, you’re my kind of people.
She’s That Friend
We all have different definitions of what makes a ride or die best friend. For some of us, it’s a kindred spirit, a sister/brother from another mother. For others, it’s that one person who is the complete antithesis of who we are and wish we could be.
Busy Philipps is most likely the latter. Take into consideration her relationship with best friend and constant date to award shows, Michelle Williams.
Watching this friendship makes you want to call your best friend, create Instagram posts of each other, and make every one of your followers jealous of your hetro life mate status.
I could deep dive into this friendship and analyze it like a thesis dissertation, or you can hear it for yourself:
Removing your nose ring to defend your best friend? No Hallmark card in the world could ever convey such beautiful sentiment.
Her Instagram is LIFE
There are some verified Instagram accounts that are carefully and methodically curated. Posts are carefully selected, face-tuned pixel by pixel, with someone else writing the post. Many of these accounts appear disingenuous, obnoxious, and worthy of the “Block” setting.
Busy Phillips’ Instagram is none of this. In fact, if you’re not following her, why are you choosing not to live your best life?

Whether it is her IG stories from her LEKfit class, which Nikki and I want to take just so that we can be in class with her, or her posts about her everyday life (including but not limited to getting slime out of her daughter’s hair, drinking red wine while rocking a sheet mask, or her own take on Mykonos Lindsay Lohan dancing), Busy’s posts inspire you to tap that heart and stop everything you’re doing just to watch her go live.

The best? This response to some asshole who thought he could body shame her with poor grammar:
She knows the difference between “your” and “you’re.” I absolutely love this girl.
