This might be the last time any of us lay eyes on a Blockbuster Video. Actually, this franchise has been going for so long at this point that some of the younger fans have never set foot in one, so there’s your depressing thought for the day.
Captain Marvel isn’t going to be a standard origin story film. While it seems that we’re going to get plenty of details about her past in the form of flashbacks, Carol already has her powers when she and Nick Fury meet each other. And what a spring chicken he is! If only he knew what kind of shenanigans were in store for him in the future.
I’d like to thank the good people of Tumblr for making gifs ever so quickly, so that we can take a more detailed look at what else happened in this trailer…
Carol is “not from around here” because she lives with the Kree—who we’ve heard of before, most notably in Guardians of the Galaxy. (Which might be why that hair is not at all an accurate representation of the 90s. The Kree seem to be leaps and bounds ahead of us with both their flying vehicles and their style.)
Some of the “memories” and “flashes” she sees are of her time in the Air Force, with shots of her training that parallel beautifully with Captain America: The First Avenger.
A wild Jude Law appears, looking like Cullen with those vegetarian vampire colored eyes. What a surprise twist! The Twilight tie-in that nobody saw coming.
We already got a look at the Skrulls in Entertainment Weekly and they make a brief appearance here, first on the beach and then on a bus, where one has shapeshifted into an old lady. (Let’s hope Carol made the right call on that one, because otherwise…yikes.)
Nick Fury is not the only familiar face in this trailer. In another callback to Guardians, Ronan the Accuser will make an appearance in Captain Marvel. I suppose some Lee Pace is better than no Lee Pace at all, so this brief shot will have to suffice for now. We get a better look at Coulson though, swiping those sunglasses off his face like he’s on an episode of CSI: Miami.
The highlight of the trailer for me was getting to see some of Carol’s powers. For some time now she’s been touted as the most powerful hero in this universe, so what we see here is only the smallest introduction to what she’s fully capable of.
What do you think?! There are a lot of expectations for this one and if this trailer is any indication, it’s well on its way to living up to them. Captain Marvel will be released in March.
