Oh wait, it was yesterday. And the company I so fondly remember was September’s Boozy Book Club meeting.
You missed it?! SHAME! It was a great time. Let’s recap what happened.
Show Me Your Teeth
Baby Teeth that is. This book was something else. Whether you loved it or hated it, you have to admit it was quite a ride. And it led to some very interesting discussion as well.
On mothering when you didn’t have such a great mother yourself and raising a child with mental illness:
I think it made her a better mother. Determined to not make the same mistakes. I think she really tried, and that in the beginning she was attentive and loving. Anyone would break under the manipulation Hanna was dishing out. I think mental illness in children is tough, because it is hard to believe a child is capable of these things. So it is often (and in some cases, probably true) blamed on bad parenting. – Elizabeth
On creepy demon children:
I can’t imagine having a child and then having them start pretending they’re a dead French witch. I’ve seen too many horror movies to pretend that can be fixed… – Emily
Nope, she is going to end up a serial killer story on Netflix. – Angela
I loved Baby Teeth and would read a sequel in a second. Reviews were a little mixed, but it finished with a very respectable 4 bottles
I Ain’t Afraid of No Ghost
If you’ve dated at all in the past 5 to 10 years, chances are you’ve been ghosted. It sucks, but it’s the reality of dating when people can hide behind their screens. Ghosted explored just how crazy you can become when you get, well, ghosted. And most of us could relate.
We found Sarah to be a little whiny, but the book was redeemed somewhat by its twists and turns.
Turns out we’re all realists and have no time for love at first sight…
They might have felt close to love in their little bubble, but it takes a lot more than being holed up for a few days to be in love. Have one night of not enough sleep and give your love a loud/slurpy food. THEN you’ll know if it is real love. – Angela
But we do like a happy ending (we’re confusing creatures, we know):
And although their family might have a shaky beginning, there’s no reason he can’t have a family of his own and also care for his mother. I was very happy with the ending considering it could’ve gone in a much different direction and this girl likes a happy ending. – Emily
While Ghosted wasn’t our favorite book club read, it did alright wine-bottle wise. We gave it a solid 3 bottles.
And Our Next Books are…
Here are your poll winners!
The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
This is a long one folks, so maybe start your reading early. And don’t blame us if you don’t finish…this book won the poll by a landslide and with that power comes COMMITMENT. But it sounds quite intriguing so I’m sure it will suck us all in right away. If the lovely Art Deco-y cover is anything to go by, I’m sold.
Don’t be thrown off if you see a book called The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle – same book. I think the author said it best himself: “‘Seven Deaths’ and ‘7 1/2 Deaths’ are exactly the same. We had a clash in the US and had to change the title there, hence 7 1/2. Don’t worry, you’re getting exactly the same amount of murder for your money, though.”
I’m already excited for a movie to be made from this, going off the Goodreads summary alone. I’m sure I’m dead wrong but it feels like a high stake, not-so-campy version of Clue. I call being Ms. Scarlett. Buy it!
Dumplin’
Curvy girl representation YAS! I can’t believe I haven’t read this book yet, but I blame my library where I’ve had their only (I know, right?!) copy on hold for the last 17 years (or something like that…). No matter, we’ll be reading it now and just in time for the movie to come out! A pageant mom played by Jennifer Aniston?! Music by Dolly Parton?! This guy as our love interest? A release to Netflix so I don’t have to pay (any more than I already do) to watch it?! I. Can’t. Wait.
Annnndddd the sequel Puddin’ is already out as well. No waiting! You can download both on your Kindle right now and go to town. Buy it!
Wait, What’s All This About Booze and Books?
It’s a book club for people who like books and also booze! Join our Facebook group and chat about books all month long. If you do read our selected book, join us on (or around–it is Facebook after all) October 29th in your comfy clothes and with a glass (or bottle, we don’t judge) of booze. You seriously don’t have to finish the book, it’s even more fun if you hate it!
