But when everything is terrible and I just want something fun and light to watch, I have a really hard time finding something funny, light hearted, and HAPPY from beginning to end. Rom coms are not my thing (too much manufactured faux drama for me) and I have not found sitcom I like since the 90s (RIP Friends and Home Improvement).
And then Phil Rosenthal walked into my life. Rather, he appeared in my Netflix feed with a show called Somebody Feed Phil. Think Anthony Bourdain. But happier. And with chair dancing. So what’s Somebody Feed Phil about? I’m glad you asked! Phil Rosenthal is a BIG TIME TV creator (Everybody Loves Raymond) who now travels around the world with a film crew eating in places from Paris to Lisbon and New Orleans. If you like Chef’s Table or Anthony Bourdain‘s Part’s Unknown, Somebody Feed Phil is pretty much like that but with TV writer jokes and a funny guy from New York.
THAT TRAILER THOUGH!!! Even the trailer makes me happy.
I learned so many useful life lesson’s from Phil. Like….
- Food tastes better when eaten with hands.
- Most people in the world are nicer than the governments who run them.
- When you are traveling, you get to meet great people.
- Experience everything.
- Try new things.
Is there are better job than traveling and eating great food? I think not. Where can I apply?
.
But it’s not just a show about food and travel and all kinds of hidden gems from around the world. Oh no. Wait until the end of each episode when Phil Skypes with his parents back home in New York. This is where the real magic happens. They have been married for over 60 years and are the real stars of the show.
They are comedy gold and I don’t think they even know it!!!
In what might be the greatest endorsement of the show, Phil’s Dad asks – “Do you have nothing else to do than watch this?” Me – “No, I don’t, Phil’s Dad. Don’t judge me.”
So make your favourite snack. Trust me, you will get hungry watching. And settle in as you are about to be whisked away to exotic (and some not so exotic) locales with Phil. Hopefully, somebody will feed him.
.
Can’t get enough of Phil? You can find more of his travels on I’ll Have What Phil is Having on PBS or Amazon.
