The situation hasn’t been quite as dire in recent years, but we’re about to enter a bit of a movie drought. All of the summer movies have been released, and studios are saving most of their awards season fodder for the fall. September can be a pretty depressing month at the movies, but thankfully this year we have a saving grace.
The trailer for Destination Wedding came out a few months ago and sadly I haven’t heard much about it since. It seemed to get lost in the shuffle of the summer of the Rom-Com Renaissance. Crazy Rich Asians is crushing it, and everyone is freaking out about To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. A movie about two cynical and miserable people forced to spend time together at a wedding fits right in.
The press tour has begun (that’s where the adorably on brand story about Keanu and Winona kind-of-but-not-really being married in real life came from) but more importantly, we’re getting lots of clips. Each one has me more and more eager to sit my ass down in the theater and be delighted.
So now we know Frank and Lindsay’s relationship to each other—he’s the grumpy half-brother of her former fiancé. Even without any other information, most of us have read enough AU fanfic to know where this is going.
MORE BANTER. This clip also seems to firmly establish that Winona Ryder is going to huff and roll her eyes throughout the entire movie, and I’m 100% on board. You can feel how much they’re secretly enjoying arguing with each other.
Ok, I think Frank may be my soulmate, so that’s exciting. Dancing is a waste of time! But he decides to be a gentleman and ask her anyway. This movie is really just diving head first into the genre and it’s a blessing. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if at some point they do get around to dancing and he doesn’t hate it quite as much as he usually does…
This movie is a perfect way to wrap up the summer. It’s like that last bottle of rosé while the weather is still warm—even though I’ll drink rosé any damn time of the year I want, because my basic bitchiness doesn’t take a day off. But my point stands. Destination Wedding will be in theaters Friday.
