This week on The Magicians, Fillory gets its democracy on and elects a new High King. Tick and Eliot face-off, but perhaps Eliot has a more important role to fill? Julia makes amends with some trees and confronts a face from her past.
Major Spoilers Ahead
Bear-ly Legal

Margo and Eliot need to see a Fairy Queen about a key, leading to a visit to Fray who has found her place in the world bar-tending to talking animals. Remember when Margo was set to marry the handsome prince from The Tribe of the Floating Mountain before his little brother ruined everything? Margo was intrigued to discover The Floaters were a matriarchal society. Margo has an equally enlightening conversation with talking bear, Humbledrum. Beastiality is also a thing in Fillory, and Eliot and Fen’s daughter-not-daughter is into that sort of thang (it isn’t her fault. She was raised by fairies). I shed a little tear when Eliot bestowed the blessing he never got from his own father on Fray and her furry boyfriend.
Ouroboros
I could post a pic of a snake eating its own tail, but gross. You get the idea. The gang is one key away from completing their quest to restore magic (or unleash a monster). The problem is, the Fairy Queen needs a safe place for her people to live and make mushroom babies before she hands over the fairy realm key. Eliot and Margo can’t give her a new fairyland without their thrones, and they can’t get their thrones without magic. Or can they? As Josh points out in his recap (maybe I should let him write these), the Children of Earth have derped things up enough as High Kings and Queens and Fillorians are OVER IT. Tick Pickwick had no trouble swooping in promising to make Fillory great again, declaring a “free” Fillory, and taking the throne for himself. But did Fillorians get a say in the matter? Are they really free? Look at Josh with the big ideas! How bout some democracy? Let Fillory choose its own leader. But who is the best candidate to represent the Children of Earth on the ballot? According to Eliot, Fillory isn’t ready to elect a female leader yet. Sorry Margo.
Answered Prayers

Between saving slave fairies and restoring order to timeline 23, Julia is getting juiced on god ju-ju. She hears some whispering that leads her to Dean Fogg. Julia has leveled up to hearing prayers! She answers one of Dean Fogg’s and repairs his eyes. What’s next on Julia’s random acts of kindness agenda?
Remember when Julia didn’t have a shade and Margo and Eliot sent her to make a deal with the Talking Trees? Then they declined so she killed them all?? Not very god-like behavior. Also not the sort of behavior that will make Fillorians elect a Child of Earth. Josh once again proves he is one of the most underrated characters on the show and has another brilliant idea. He gets Julia to re-grow The Talking Trees, making sure some Fillorians are around to witness the miraculous event, and passes them some flyers reminding them to “Vote Children of Earth.”
In an effort to discover what is really going on with the whole monster in the castle at the end of the world thing, Julia faces her biggest hurdle in her journey to become…whatever it is she is becoming. Penny 23 reminds Julia and Kady that there is a god they could ask, he just isn’t a god anymore, but he isn’t dead either. Where has Reynard been rotting since his mommy took his spark and gave it to Julia? Delivering pizzas! His only company is the bullet Julia made to kill him, which Hades (his stepfather???) gave him should he decide to kill himself. Perfect weapon for killing this monster the gods hid away in the castle at the end of the world! Julia and Kady could use the bullet to kill Reynard, but they leave him frozen to wallow in his despicable little life. I suspect letting him live adds another boost to Julia’s growing power.
I’m With Her

And the new High King of Fillory is … Margo! Good thing for Margo talking animals have the right to vote and outnumber the humans by staggering numbers. Margo took time to acknowledge Humbledrum and his concerns when they visited Fray in the bar. Although I would think he would want to support his potential sort-of father-in-law, but anyway! As a respected member of the talking animal community, Humbledrum is able to get Margo elected by write-in. Long live High King Margo, long may she reign! The Fairy Queen finally admits what we all suspected. She has seen potential in Margo all along, and as a gift for her new achievements, restores her eye with an extra fairy-eye upgrade.
What do you think Margo will be able to see with her new fairy eye?
Check in next week for the actual season finally, where I will probably still scream at the screen that it has ended too soon.
