Black Panther is prowling in theaters near you right now, and I am HERE FOR IT! As the other Nikki here at That’s Normal pointed out, even if you’re not a Marvel fan, Black Panther has something for you. Perhaps the world doesn’t need anymore gushing posts, but this film dork can’t help herself! I have so much I want to say, but I’ve done my best to narrow it down to a highlight reel.
The Director
The real king of Wakanda is Ryan Coogler. If you are not familiar with his work, settle in for movie night at your house. Run down to the nearest Redbox or get on that voice remote and find a way to watch Fruitvale Station and Creed. Although each film covers very different subject matter, what they have in common is a very clear vision and raw power in their story telling that seamlessly translates to the audience. In Black Panther, prepare to bask in a beautiful world of Coogler’s imagination for a few too short hours before the theater lights come up. As T’Challa says when we first enter Wakanda, it “never gets old.” It is a land of color and rhythm. In her, Coogler creates a near Utopia, whose perfection is only challenged by those who seek to control her for better or worse.
The Fights
Another nod to Coogler’s talents is his ability to block a fight scene! We saw it first when he breathed new life into the Rocky revival with Creed. Sure, there’s some green screen action at work here (or tell me where I can visit that waterfall!).
You’re not going to go cross-eyed keeping up with Iron Man flying around a sky beam, knowing bad guys are getting hurt while all you see is a blur. The fights are physical. The movements are crisp. I found myself resisting the urge to bob and weave in my seat. When a character gets hit, you will feel their pain.
The Villains
Ulysses Klaue – Andy Serkis
You may not recognize him, but he’s been in some of the biggest blockbusters of the last (almost) two decades. Anyone catch Lord of the Rings? How about King Kong? Perhaps you’re more a Planet of the Apes fan? Ever heard of Supreme Leader Snoak? If these ring any bells, you are familiar with the work of Andy Serkis. It’s refreshing to actually see his face in a movie! He proves he is more than a voice who has a knack for motion capture, he can act too!
Erik Killmonger – Michael B. Jordan
I predicted a bright future for him when I first saw him on Friday Night Lights back in 2009, and he has exceeded my expectations. Michael B. Jordan is clearly a favorite of director Ryan Coogler, and with good reason. If he wasn’t surrounded by a stellar cast, he would have no problem stealing the show. His presence raised the bar for any actor who appeared on screen with him.
The Women
I can’t give Michael B. Jordan the award for stealing the show, because that honor without question goes to the women! I’m just as in love with each of them as I want to be them. I can’t take anything away from Wonder Woman for breaking down some walls and busting through some glass ceilings, but the stars of Black Panther have heard the rallying cry. Without giving too much away, here are some examples of what I’m talking about:
Can we make Angela Bassett queen of everything?
More like our time.
What would a super hero be without his trusty tech nerd back at the lab working on his suit advancements? Not as cool as Black Panther with his brilliant and badass sister, Shuri!
Did I already mention the fight scenes? That thing by the water fall was cool and all, but have you seen Okoye and her spear?
In case you can’t tell from the previews, Marvel has plenty more movies coming our way. I can’t imagine any of them topping Black Panther, but I can’t wait to see them try! WAKANDA FOREVER!
