Fun story, readers: Back when that whole “Deflategate” thing happened I was genuinely baffled, because I had no idea footballs were filled with air. I thought they were a nerf-y foam covered in that brown, bumpy stuff. Needless to say, I’m not all that invested in how the big game turns out on Sunday. What I am invested in are the movie trailers that air during the commercial breaks. Every year there are at least one or two really exciting sneak peeks. Based on which studios have bought air time and what those studios have coming out this year, we can make some pretty good guesses as to what will make movie fans cheer while everyone else is keeping their eye on that sportsball scoreboard.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
I’ve never seen any of these movies because my second grade class watched part of the first one when we learned about dinosaurs and it scared the hell out of me. This time around,
Perhaps they should mount a campaign to figure out why anyone in the entire world thought that bringing dinosaurs back was a good idea. There’s an eighty billions percent chance that ends in disaster every single time. I’ll look forward to Jurassic World: Maybe Let’s Not in a few years.
Mission Impossible: Fallout
A.k.a. Henry Cavill‘s Heinous Mustache Movie. Tom Cruise has confirmed that a spot for the movie will air, so this one’s a definite. He really likes to push the fact that he does his own stunts for these movies, but let’s be real, the only thing anyone cares about is Henry Cavill’s facial hair. Both the Eiffel Tower and Angela Freakin’ Bassett are in this shot, yet there’s one thing that pulls focus over all of it. If that mustache isn’t a vital part of the plot I’m going to be very disappointed.
Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War
Black Panther is coming out in a few weeks, and even thought ticket sales are already breaking records Marvel is going to make a last, big push. And if you can believe it, Super Bowl Sunday will be exactly three months until Avengers: Infinity War, so showing a new trailer is likely. This is the one I’m most looking forward to, and I’m hoping that it’s early enough in the night that I can change the channel if the footballing gets boring.
It’s possible that new trailers for Annihilation, Pacific Rim Uprising (the movie that looks like Transformers but apparently isn’t), A Wrinkle in Time, and Netflix’s Cloverfield sequel will air, among others. Since the Super Bowl is watched by every demographic, studios are going to want to make sure that there’s a little something for everyone.
Unfortunately some studios are notorious for never buying time, so there are several highly anticipated movies that are going to have to wait for another day to blow our minds. Tomb Raider, Aquaman, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald are all movies that I would really love to see a spot for, but someone always has to be a party pooper, and this time it’s Warner Brothers. They do not get a touchdown. Football jokes!
Do you watch the Super Bowl for the game or something else? Also, share your favorite party snack, because I think a few of us are still looking for ideas.
