And we TOTALLY deserve it.
I was at a really nice pool in San Diego last weekend (sorry) during the Eagles vs. Falcons game and there was this ONE girl, cute girl, actually, with an Eagles hat and a loud mouth screaming at every play of the game, making it KNOWN that she’s an Eagles Fan.
It was obnoxious and embarrassing.
My boyfriend was in LA a few weeks back when the Eagles played in town and it was overrun by people from Philly. He went to In and Out one night and his crew sat next to a bunch of guys in Eagles jerseys. Making conversation, and because it isn’t every day you run into dudes wearing your team’s jersey across the country, he asked where they were from.
PHILLY!
One guy rudely screamed. Looking at him like he was an idiot for asking.
He was like.. “Yeah, Okay. Me too dude, calm down.”
(For the record, they were from South Jersey.)
Our city is the place where a fan gets drunk and hits a police horse on which a police was mounted (just last weekend. For real)
The Police put CRISCO on the poles to grease them so that people wouldn’t climb the poles if the Eagles won (or lost) last night. (For the record- people still found poles the climb)
Good morning from Philly where crews from the city are greasing the light poles with Crisco to prevent #Eagles fans from climbing after the #NFCChampionshipGame tonight. #Vikings pregame coverage starts at 3 on FOX9. If you want to know all the details, like that time that alcohol sales were banned from the stadium for a few games in the 80s because of fans, check out this article.
So yeah, we kinda deserve our bad rap.
But also….. there are normal fans here in Philly. Especially IN Philly, in the neighborhoods. These people like the teams, they buy the gear, they wear the colors, they follow their teams every move, watch every game, and travel to other cities to see them play.
But they also know how to hold their alcohol and when visiting other cities appreciate that their residents may love their teams just as much as he/she loves their Philly team. And they understand that maybe you are a fan of a team because it’s based in the city near where you grew up (or where your dad grew up) and not necessarily because your team deserves all the praise.
In San Diego, with that crazy girl at the pool, I was watching the Game TOO, but I didn’t feel the need to make it KNOWN that I was from Philly. I cheered when we scored. People knew I liked the Eagles better than the Falcons, and I didn’t embarrass anyone (well, maybe my 3 trips to the taco cart were embarrassing..)
Don’t mistake me for a real fan though. I’m not. I am from Philly. I appreciate sports. I know the name of our two QBs (our starter got hurt guys!), I even own a jersey and had an Eagles Starter Jacket in the 7th grade. But give us a losing streak like we normally have, and I’m out. Big time.
But this is cool. My city got the NFC Championship and we’re headed to the Superbowl again to lose to the Patriots (again). That’s something to be proud of! Not “Climb a pole covered in Crisco” proud. But Proud enough to put on a hat and drink a beer!
Fly Eagles Fly!
