And because I’m in the height of the holiday spirit (yes, I am wearing a Christmas sweater that features a cat saying Meow-y Christmas while writing this, why do you ask?) I thought I would compile a list of Christmas movies for every feeling you might be feeling this year. Because there’s never a wrong time to watch a movie that spreads holiday cheer – whether you’re bawling your eyes out or high on a sugar rush from all the cookies you’ve been eating. Happy Holidays y’all.
If You’re Feeling Nostalgic
This one may be a deep cut for some, but it’s a classic at my house. I just watched it last week! In my opinion, it’s one of Judy Garland’s greatest hits and is filled with the catchiest songs. If you haven’t heard of it, the premise is this: The Smith family lives in St. Louis in 1903 and the movie follows them for a year leading up the World’s Fair in 1904. There’s romance, cheeky children, parties, and trolley rides. This movie is also where the Christmas song that makes me cry every time I hear it, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” originates from. Judy sings it while looking wistfully into the distance and I immediately curl myself into a ball and bawl. But it’s ok! There’s a happy ending! And the best costumes ever!
Plus it’s in technicolor!
If You Want To Believe
I watch this movie every year and every year I’m shocked at how funny it is. Maybe I just secretly love Tim Allen, idk. I’ve been watching this movie since I was a kid and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. It’s just a fun Christmas movie. Who doesn’t want their Dad to be Santa?! This movie also introduced me to my favorite version of “White Christmas” performed by The Drifters. If you don’t think that’s a bop we can’t be friends.
Don’t bother with the sequels, you’ll just be disappointed.
If You Need a Good Cry
Lot’s of things make this movie cry-worthy. The cringe-y-ness that is Sarah Jessica Parker as Meredith, when Esme from Twilight watches Meet Me in St Louis and cries (just like me!!), when Diane Keaton signs to her deaf, gay son that she loves him, at the gift that Meredith gives them all at the end, at the circumstances of this family, AT EVERYTHING. I love this movie, but I can only watch it the one time each year. If you haven’t watched it before, do so alone so you don’t ugly cry all over everyone. Christmas, man, it can be rough.
Plus it got “Two Thumbs Up!”
If You’re Feeling The Love
This is another movie that makes me cry but in the happiest way possible. When Hugh Grant narrates that airport montage at the beginning and the end, my faith in humanity is restored. LOVE REALLY IS ALL AROUND! SING IT BILLY MACK!
Apparently, some people hate this movie, which is news to me. I guess they get bad vibes from Rick Grimes with his obnoxious signs, aren’t here for the dash of fat-shaming satire (I hope it’s satire…), and harbor lots of hatred for Professor Snape as a cheating sadsack. And yes, I feel all those things, but I still love this movie. It depicts love in every way. Sometimes it sucks, sometimes it doesn’t work out, and sometimes IT’S THE BEST THING EVER.
If You’re Feeling Busy
This one is a tie between A Christmas Prince (not to be confused with Sam Heughan’s classic A Princess for Christmas) and Christmas Inheritance – Netflix’s contributions to the cheesy Christmas movie genre. These are your classic “we all need to learn a Christmas lesson” films. Actually…I’m not sure what getting a prince for Christmas has anything to do with learning a lesson, but I’m sure there’s something. Lie about who you are? Be nosier? Live out your dreams and good things will come to you? Your guess is as good as mine.
These movies are perfect for when you’re trimming the tree, wrapping presents or just generally not paying attention, but want your TV on in the background. Yes, even my background noise needs to be festive right now. Chopped just won’t cut it this month (geddit?!)
I hear you shouting that you don’t have time for two new holiday classics because of all the parties and carol singing you’ve been invited to (do people still do that?), so how can you choose?! Should you shack up with the prince of Aldovia (no I’m not kidding) or take a trip to Snow Falls and date that dude from that one season of The Office? The movies have some striking similarities – they both star ladies from The CW, in both movies these ladies are pretending to be someone they’re not, and – spoiler alert – they both get the guy in the end. Let’s be real – you need to watch both – parties be damned.
The upcoming award season is going to be a real nail biter. How will best picture voters ever choose between A Christmas Prince and A Christmas Inheritance?

If You’re Feeling Any Which Way
I saved the best (and most expected) for last! If you make it Christmas Eve without at least catching 10 minutes of this on the TBS 24 hour marathon showing than do you even celebrate Christmas? The answer is NO. My boyfriend happens to own a (mini) leg lamp and I’ll have you know we took our Christmas card picture with it and my cat dressed up as Ralphie as a bunny this year. Don’t ask questions, just go with it.
