I first binged this show right after Season 1 Season 1 premiered last Summer and you can read my The Girlfriend Experience primer here. Or if you’re lazy:
The Girlfriend Experience is the story of Christine Reade, a second year law student in Chicago who lands a prestigious internship and is intrigued by her law school friend’s “side job” as a GFE- a woman who provides emotional and sexual relationships (expensive ones) known as “The Girlfriend Experience” to rich men.
Christine Reade looks so much like Kristen Stewart:
In the show, many of the men have a real emotional need for connection. Most are married, one is recently widowed. They are lonely and want a beautiful companion to listen to them (and… ya know, get them off)
It reminds me so much of the mistresses men kept in regency eras (and.. all throughout history) these women are cared for and paid for and “kept up” by the rich men in their lives. And sex and companionship is expected.
But that was Season 1. Season 2 looks a bit different:
From Starz
Season two will focus on entirely new characters and take on a new format by following two parallel storylines each written, directed and executive produced by Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz.
Lodge Kerrigan’s storyline follows Erica Myles (Anna Friel- co-star of Pushing Daisies, the best show to ever have been to television), as the commanding financing director of a Super PAC and Anna Garner (Louisa Krause) as the smart and confident GFE (Girlfriend Experience) provider. Together and emotional and sexual relationship emerges under the backdrop of dark money in the upcoming 2018 U.S. midterm elections. Totally impossible, right?
Amy Seimetz wrote the story of Bria Jones (Carmen Ejogo) as she enters the Witness Protection Program after an abusive relationship. As a former high-end escort with a lavish lifestyle, Bria relocates to New Mexico with her step-daughter and revives her career as a sex worker, throwing her new identity and new life in jeopardy.
These two very different story-lines will have the same sexy, dark and thrilling treatment that was woven in the first season of The Girlfriend Experience. While I’m disappointed not to see more of Christine Reade’s story in this season, knowing how much I loved the first series, I am excited to check out these next two story-lines!
The Girlfriend Experience premieres on Starz on Nov. 5th
