(Major Spoilers Ahead)
War Woes
We open this week with Ross and Demelza taking in the scenery with little Jeremy and Clowance (and I thought Valentine had an unfortunate name), while contemplating Dr. Enys and Caroline’s dilemma. Dwight is still imprisoned in France, witnessing the guards play with the prisoners lives like cats with mice. Caroline is holding on to hope that an uprising will lead to the release of officers from the prisons, but Ross is skeptical. He knows that war is a messy business, and things rarely go as planned. It is becoming more apparent to him that the only way to free his friend, is to go break him out himself.
Love Never Did Run Smooth
Meanwhile, we get a few tender moments between Morwenna and Drake, before Morwenna RUINS EVERYTHING. I can’t stand the whole, “break his heart to save him!” storyline. Why does he believe her? Could it be there is something more sinister afoot here, Drake? Perhaps her family is plotting to marry her off to a slime ball? Rather than doing something incredibly stupid (like stowing away on a suicide mission) you could figure out what is really going on and SAVE THE GIRL! Before anyone can so much as hit him with the whole “plenty of fish” speech, Drake runs off to join Ross in his quest to spring Dr. Enys free.
My thoughts exactly ladies!
The Princess and The Frog
While Ross and Drake are off storming prisons in France, the Warlaggen’s are stuck on the rungs of that social ladder they’re trying to climb. There’s a big ball in town and George and Elizabeth’s invite got lost in the mail. No worries! George has the lovely Morwenna to dangle in front of the ugly toad, Rev. Whitworth. George uses this connection to secure his invite so he can do his best to defame Ross within earshot of Lord Falmouth. It has come to George’s attention that a spot in parliament could be offered to Ross, and George’s ego can’t quite handle it.
After George’s many failed attempts to get a proper introduction with Falmouth, he takes matters into his own hands. His solution is to speak loudly about Ross’s disgraceful plan to lead good men on a dangerous mission to free Dr. Enys. Falmouth appears very unimpressed with George’s ravings. To add insult to injury, George has a run in with Demelza where he continues to make his thoughts on Ross’s heroics known. Demelza is also unimpressed.
Morwenna is a pretty, little pawn trapped in George’s game. Not even Aunt Agatha will save her. She’s the one who set Morwenna up to lie to Drake about her feelings, warning that George’s cruelty could come down on Drake like a ton of bricks if she doesn’t end their relationship. Unfortunately, this leaves Morwenna wide open to the advances of the Reverend, leaving us to witness these uncomfortable encounters. I imagine things will only get worse for her. Gag!
Prison Break!
And you thought Demelza made child birth look easy! Wait till you see Ross and the boys break Dwight Enys outta prison! First, they row their little boat to shore in France with absolutely no resistance. Then they punch their way in to the lightly guarded prison like ninjas in the night, and finally find their buddy Dwight looking at them all dazed and confused. But wait! Some random kid sounds the alarm for no discernible reason I can determine other than to kill off Captain Henshawe and make us think they are killing off Drake. If you’re living on rats in a prison where the guards are placing bets on which one of you they shoot next, wouldn’t you want to sneak out quietly with the other guys escaping rather than alerting ALL of the guards? I thought so. As luck would have it, one of Dwight’s fellow inmates is smart enough to join them. Later, we discover that he happens to be the nephew of Lord Falmouth. The very Lord Falmouth who George was trying so hard to sway against Ross. BOOM!
Here’s to ya, none for ya George! That should keep the smug smile off his face, until next week anyway. Until then lets enjoy the win!
