Humidity
I think one of the biggest factors that determines personal preference of seasons is how a person feels physically, and I do not do well in the heat and humidity. Apart from the superficial things like my hair being a frizzy mess and my skin being harder to take care of because I break out more, the summer usually makes me foggy and terrible overall. There were spans of time this summer where I had a headache every single day for weeks. Every time I step outside and it’s hot it completely zaps my energy, whereas when it’s cold, it gives me a jolt and wakes me up.
Summer Clothes
For the most part, I like to be mostly covered as I walk about the world, so obviously this makes summer clothes an issue. This year I got really into maxi dresses, and them being floor length helped a lot. But I’m looking forward to being able to throw on four layers and not worry that I’m going to melt.
Air Conditioning Noise
I have a window unit in my room that sounds like a screeching metal beast trying to claw its way out of hell, and even loud central air grates on me after a while. It will be nice to bask in the soft, quiet hiss of my heating.
Bugs
When the cold weather and frost sets in, all the mosquitos and other bugs can go back into the Underworld where they belong, until they emerge next year to torture us again. I’ve seen all the arguments about how bugs are a vital part of the ecosystem and I could not care less about any of it. Bugs are disgusting, full stop. As bad as getting mosquito bites usually is, I have the added bonus of being allergic, so it’s even worse than normal. Goodbye bugs, I hate you all.
Summertime Socialization
If the weather is freezing, it becomes much more common to burrow into your home and never come out, which is my preferred method of existence. Actually, I’m usually more likely to go out when it’s cold because I find the weather more pleasant, but the point is, if you’re reluctant to leave your house when it’s hot and sunny, it makes you look anti-social, whereas in the cold you get to be “cozy.”
One of the only things that I actually like to venture outside for in the summer is the only thing I’m going to miss about the season…
The Beach
I didn’t get to go as much this year as I wanted (I feel like I say that every year), and by mid-March I’m going to be jumpy about getting there as soon as it’s warm enough. It’s peaceful and beautiful and I’m not what you would call “outdoorsy,” but the beach is my “become one with nature” place. Until next year…
Where are all my cold weather lovers? Are you ready?
