There is no better feeling than thinking you’re reading the last book in a series, only to find out in the end there’s more. You spend the last 25% of the book screaming “Oh shit how are they gonna wrap up all these loose ends! So-and-so still has to get with what’s-her-face, and we still need to defeat the evil faery king! Ok, well now we defeated him, but what about life after?! It can’t end now!” There’s always an evil faery king out there somewhere, and yes I did include myself in that “we.” We’re in this book together. Turns out, A Court of Wings and Ruin is NOT the last book in the series – we get more! Feyre and Rhysand forever!
SHIPPING – ALL ABOARD
I’ll admit it, I’m a shipper. But never before have I actually said that word. It rubs me the wrong way and I hate that there’s a name for a phenomenon that people have been doing since stories were invented (I’m guessing…I’m sure there was someone who wanted Odysseus and Calypso or Juliet and Paris to get together back in olden times). That being said, I’m shipping all over this book. I can even forgive the talk of souls speaking, mating bonds that send your thoughts out like a string with two cans, and orgasms leaving “skin glowing like a newborn star in its wake.” I’m all for it. Give me all the emotions. There are so many great characters who I still want to get together, and usually, SJM delivers. Thank the lord for these additional books because there is a lot of sexual tension that I need to continue to read about and imagine myself in that hot faery action. Yes, I just said “hot faery action” in all seriousness.
I SHOULD DEFINITELY KNOW WHO THAT CHARACTER IS…
My suggestion if you’ve read the first two books in this series is to go back and reread them anyway. I did not and it might be my one regret about my reading, even though it gives me an excuse to go back and read them all again. Like Sarah J Maas’s other works, this world is epic. There’s the human world, ~beyond the wall~, Hybern, Velaris, and a bunch of other places I already can’t remember even though I just read the book. Some of this knowledge isn’t necessary, but I find when you’re reading a book so involved with such meticulous world-building, it helps to have these details in the back of your mind. So instead of trying to rack your brain for where the last book left off and if Tamlin and Tarquin are the same person (spoiler alert: they’re not), you just know. I, on the other hand, had to google these things and found out there’s a pretty intense fan site for these series. So thanks fangirls, you helped a lazy fangirl out.
WHAT’S NEXT?
According to my dedicated fangirls, A Court of Thorns and Roses was only supposed to be a trilogy, making this the last book. The ending does come full circle in most of the major plot points, and let me tell you your emotions will not be spared. This book is a rollercoaster. But according to Goodreads, there are at least three more untitled books in the series. There’s little info about them, so that begs the question: what comes next? Ms. Maas herself only left us with this on the last page:
“There are more tales to be told in the land of Prythian. The series will continue in 2018.”
That vague wording leaves me thinking that maybe they’re spinoff books with characters we’re familiar with, but not our main squeezes Feyre and Rhysand. And honestly, I’m happy with that. Their story has been told for three books, and to see more might just be overkill. Knowing Maas, she might do something dramatic that will make all us readers very unhappy. This series doesn’t need more death – one war is enough, thank you. Her twitter and blog are empty of info, the last posts were from late 2015 and 2016. So I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
