Come With Me on this Riverdale Journey

in Entertainment on 05/30/17 by Beth 11 Comments

I am 37 years old. I have a 12-year-old daughter. I am not the demographic for the CW’s newest teen-obsession, Riverdale. But I watched it anyway (see the aforementioned 12 year old who wanted in on it). I went in blind; I am five episodes in, and I still feel like I am stumbling through a dark high school hallway trying to figure out this schtick.

Before I Watched

I knew Riverdale had Cole Sprouse in it.

I knew it was based on the Archie comics.

I thought Cole Sprouse must play Archie.

I have some working knowledge of the Archie comics, reading them, watching them on TV at some point.

I thought it was a comedy.

After all, it is BASED ON THE ARCHIE COMICS.

I thought Betty and Veronica were like Velma and Daphne.

I thought it was a Netflix Original.

I thought Jughead was, like, comic relief.

I knew The Teens™ were super into it.

I figured The Teens™ were super into it because Archie and Jughead were a ship, and Betty and Veronica were the other ship.

Gay Husbands, natch  source

Cole Sprouse is a cutie, and when did that happen because I was an adult when Big Daddy was out.

After I Watched

What does this have to do with the bubblegum?

Were Archie comics on bubblegum?

I can’t remember anymore.

Why is Jughead emo?

WHY IS COLE SPROUSE, JUGHEAD?

I thought the cute one was supposed to be Archie.

This kid playing Archie is not a real ginger.

But also … so what???

This plot involves murder!

And like, teen sexual activity?

And Veronica is like a mobster’s daughter???

Maybe not. I’m not paying much attention.

Cole Sprouse as Jughead (and in general) is giving me 90s Leo vibes.

My daughter when I mentioned this

OMG Luke Perry is HIS DAD.

His SUPER OLD LOOKING Dad.

That’s ok, that’s ok. I was a few years too young to care about 90210. I’m still ok to be watching this.

*record scratch* …

Skeet Ulrich is the OTHER super old looking dad.

I’d like to.  source

I’m definitely too old to be enjoying this.

Am I enjoying this?

Josie and the Pussycats: do I remember this from the comics?

Yes, I definitely do.

That’s my only memory of Josie and the Pussycats. (I def never saw THIS in the theater.)

Do I have ANY real memories of these comics?

Was this a Saturday morning cartoon that I suppressed?

I am MomShaming this teacher/student plot line. HELL NO.

Super not ok with the Tampa Teacher.

There is much I do not understand.

And now

Help me. If you love this show, tell me why. If you hate this show, that too.

Watch this with me, fellow 30-somethings. Is this show good? It’s like Pretty Little Liars meets Once Upon a Time or something and I’m not sure if I’m allowed to be into it, or even if I am.

One thing I do know: the last teen show I tried to watch was Shadowhunters and this is SUPER WAY MUCH better than that shitshow.

Am I getting too old to be into Teen Stuff?

OR … could I fall into a serious fandom hole with this one?

Have you binge-watched Riverdale yet?
