I’m Officially On Board for “The Beguiled”

A while back I wrote a post about some upcoming period pieces that I was looking forward to, and The Beguiled was one of them. I had just seen the first trailer and was intrigued. Well, a new trailer was just released on Wednesday and intrigue has been ramped up to excitement, because it’s intense and looks wonderfully creepy and the exact opposite of everything you would expect from a summer movie, which is why it’s absolutely perfect.

Did they feed Colin Farrell murder pie?!

It certainly looks like it, and then proceed to sit at the dinner table smirking while they watch him die. The first trailer established a Southern Gothic vibe and it was clear that there was going to be some kind of mystery, but this one makes it look like some seriously scary stuff is going to go down. Asking for both a saw and an anatomy book can really only mean a few things, absolutely none of them good.

Director Sophia Coppola’s films have always had great style, and I love the feminine font in hot pink on the title cards juxtaposed with shots like Nicole Kidman covered in blood. I’m also highly in favor of the entire cast being women with the exception of one lone male. You know he’s going to be bad news, and in almost every other case I’d be all, “How can these girls get taken in by this guy?” But then I see the “soak him with a ton of water” shot of Colin Farrell and I’m like, “Well yeah, okay.”

I love, love, love this shot of all of them (and Elle Fanning’s face in particular) while he screams “What have you done to me, you vengeful bitches?!” Because honestly, goals. If someone doesn’t yell that at me at some point in my life it means I’m not doing enough.

The Beguiled doesn’t come out until June 23rd, but that’ll be here sooner than you think. It will make its big premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
