Setting Up The Perfect Home Office!

in Features on 03/30/17 by Nikki 5 Comments

One of my New Year’s Resolutions or Goals was to declutter and as part of that it meant completely overhauling my “office.” At my old place I had a standing desk that I loved using and believed in the benefits of. Moving to my new place a few years ago, and into a smaller office space made it almost unusable, so it ended up being where office things went to die, from old equipment to stacks of mail and paperwork, it was a mess and I never used it, even when I transitioned to working from home. And did I mention the room is diamond shaped and surrounded by either windows or glass sliding doors? Yea, it’s the ultimate conundrum when trying to figure out a design.

I also needed to find better ways to organize, to purge and to buy products that make work better. Here’s what I ended up doing to create the perfect office.

A Desk That Works For You!

I was THISCLOSE to buying a desk that looks much like the one I ended up with from West Elm, but after hearing enough horror stories from friends and online about their West Elm furniture, I went with this copy-cat desk from Target that’s pretty much the same damn thing. It also helps that Target made the West Elm desk better because the lid on the top opens up to reveal electrical outlets and USB ports! WHOOHOO!! I love this desk, whereas I used to spend most of my time working on the couch because there was barely any room around my standing desk, I spend most of the day at this one now. My back is sooo much happier now.

Organization Trays

office
I bought these mint colored bad boys from the Target Dollar Spot for NOT a dollar (rude). Two fit perfectly in one of the desk drawers and stores all kinds of things… a backup pair of headphones, Sharpies (need sooo many Sharpies), Washi tape, Post-Its, Paperclips, Lollia’s Relax Hand Creme and a Bic lighter for candles. #Sensual

Organization Cart

home office, raskog, ikea
Pretty much everyone has one of these RASKOG carts from Ikea, right? I did and it was gathering dust in the previous incarnation of my home office, so I cleaned it off and filled it with baskets and then threw in stuff that needed a home, like all the journals and notebooks I’ve collected and haven’t used yet.

Candles

VoluspaNothing says don’t have a panic attack after your inbox reaches 500 like lighting fire to a nice candle (and not your house). I love Voluspa (French Cade Lavender, Sake Lemon Flower) and PF Candle Co (Gold Coast) and Paddwax’s Jane Austen Library candle that smells like an english rose garden. Ugh, their whole literary series is great!

Diffuser

I’ve talked about oils a bunch in the past and I’m a believer: I put them on my body, on other people’s bodies and diffuse them in my house including my office. It’s also great because the diffuser helps keep the air moist and you healthy! I have a couple but the one in my office is by Art Naturals that will last most of the work day. Normally it sits on the shelf behind me but if I’m feeling sick (like the last week), I put it right on the desk next to me and inhale it up!

Yoga Ball

Because of sitting most of the day and also because I have a bum back and hips, I have a Yoga Ball for both stretching and for sitting on while at the desk. “They” say it helps strengthen the core but I think it also helps with fidgeting, which I need help with! Speaking of fidgeting, I keep seeing these Fidget Toys and need

.
This is definitely NOT a finished product, I need an updated chair, some better lighting and a couple other items to round out where I spend 75% of EVERY week day.

On My List of Things For the Perfect Office Set-up:

Better / More Fashionable Chair

As you can see I have this gorgeous black chair I’ve had SINCE COLLEGE!!!! How in the world this thing made it through college and a cross country move and it still working is beyond me. But in the meantime it works while I try to figure out what is the most comfortable and best looking chair I can find…
Perhaps this Blue rolley guy or this velvet chair? I can’t decide. Help me or sent me links for options!

Better Lighting

Thank goodness for daylight savings time (the only time this sentence has ever been said) because before the time change I would be working by the light of the computer screen around 5PM. I clearly need a better lighting situation and I’m thinking a nice gold lamp is in order, kinda like this one on top of a desk that looks a lot like mine. WHERE CAN I GET THIS?! Anyone? Everything I’ve found is way too big.

More Art

Beyond my super cute framed silhouettes my BF got me while we were at Disneyland (I’ve wanted them forrrrever!) and the “Calm Yo Tits” piece Bekah sent me for Christmas, I don’t have much else decorating the space. I have approximately 10 inches of actual wall space that isn’t glass and I’m thinking I need to hang something on it. I’ve been eyeing one of these awesome pennants from Rayo and Honey, cause that’s some truth. They’ve got a bunch more if thighs aren’t part of your decor aesthetic.
.

With the home office mostly tackled, it’s time to hit the kitchen… * sigh * can I get rid of the five additional Pyrex dishes I’ve somehow inherited? We shall see!
