Accurate. So, one month from the premiere of the first episode, they’ve released the main title sequence.
Ok, so it’s not a preview of the full episode like the folks at SXSW got last month, but it’s an awesome start. That final totem pole is a perfect juxtaposition of old gods and American excess, thank to the awesome work by Elastic.
“Is it strange to want action figures from a main title sequence? Crucified astronauts, neon cowboys and S&M centaurs, we bow to Elastic and their spectacular vision. A totem of godly visions we didn’t know we needed to worship until they showed us the light with this clarion call to the ‘American Gods’,” said co-Showrunners and Executive Producers Bryan Fuller and Michael Green.
These titles feel deeply mysterious … how do you create something ancient and kitschy at the same time! Clay statues and relics mixed with fiber optics and virtual reality. Astronauts on the cross. Neon cowboys and native eagles.
But that song … Starz always has awesome title sequences to their shows (Black Sails and Outlander are top notch). The visuals here are spot on and amazing (for me, someone who’s read the book three times and for newbies who have no idea what the show is about, we all want to know more), but the song isn’t punchy enough. And definitely isn’t hummable. I want the song to be annoying when I binge watch it … not forgettable.
But I do love how that final moment doesn’t let us forget the most important aspect of American Gods (and all things pop culture)…Everything Goes Back to Twilight. Hi, David Slade. #EGBTT
Best news of all, according to Shadow Moon himself, American Gods has already been picked up for season 2 – without a single episode airing!
