Moments when “Girls” made a difference

in TV on 02/03/17 by Kate 1 Comment

Girls is saying goodbye this year as it premieres its sixth and final season on Feb. 12 on HBO. The show came on the air in 2012 and was an instant hit, winning awards and acclaim for its realistic views of sex, body image and female friendships. The show went through its ups and downs throughout the seasons and was criticized heavily. Girls did change TV in some ways, but not in others.

The portrayal of twenty-something girls trying to make it work in NYC was related to only a small demographic but its hilarious look at millennial angst and entitlement made it a hit. Here is a look at some of the best moments of Girls over the years.

Redesigning a Leading Woman’s Body

Something that the show did most successfully in my opinion was to show the world that there can be multiple body types on TV and that the leading lady didn’t have to be 120 pounds. Hannah eats pasta and ice cream without commenting on how she will have to work it off later. She takes off her clothes without hesitation or self-loathing. The show unapologetically showed that you don’t need to be a size 2 to be attractive and wanted.

It Provided a realistic look at millennials

This was probably one of the few shows who put millennials as the main focus and did it in a realistic way. It showed the frustrating process of trying to get paid for work. It showcased the entitlement and self-absorption of the generation. Somehow people kept watching.

This really speaks to those of us who have tried running and, well, it just didn’t work out.

It made going braless seem really normal

In a very subtle way, Girls showed that it is totally normal for women to not wear and bra and also not have it be a big deal. The push-up bra has died and with its death comes a new era of freedom. I don’t think the show ever mentioned the fact that some of the girls did go braless and that’s the part that makes it better. It can just be normal. Whether the idea floats you boat or not, Girls at least made the option more realistic.

It actually portrayed real sex

From the very beginning of the show, sex was always real. The characters got sweaty, sometimes it didn’t work, sometimes it was really awkward and sometimes it looked really weird. Girls didn’t have an orgasm in 30 seconds, that kind of thing. The women on the show had sex when they wanted and for fun. For once, a show switched up gender roles and did a great job of it.

It showed real female friendship

There are countless examples of different kinds of female friendship in the show, but one of the things it does show is that you can chose friends over romantic relationships. It showed that female friendship can be just as meaningful. It is messy and complicated and can often end in blow out fights. Hannah and Jessa’s fight over Adam highlights it. One minute they love each other and the other, they aren’t talking. It shows that their friendship is worth fighting for.
