Did you feel the tear form in the space-time continuum? Did a shiver go down your spine? Did your skin instantly clear? All of those things should have happened, because did. you. SEE Meryl Streep’s speech at the Golden Globes on Sunday? If you didn’t, watch it in all its glory below.
Viola Davis, perhaps the only person in competition with Meryl for being the greatest human being alive, not only presented her with the Cecil B. DeMille Award but also had the perfect reaction.
Same, Viola.
She didn’t raise her voice, throw her arms up in the air, she didn’t call names or get mean. She just calmly and eloquently tore Trump a new one. And it was beautiful. This was a lifetime achievement award for her acting career. She could have used her time to thank everyone who’s helped get her to where she is today, her family, etc., but she knows an opportune moment when she sees it.
One of the craziest responses I’ve seen in response to her speech is that people in Hollywood should stay in their lane and not venture into politics. Which seems like an ironic viewpoint from people who went into the booth and voted for the host of The Celebrity Apprentice to be the leader of the free world.
What may have brought me even more joy than Meryl’s speech was Trump’s response. I’m not going to post the tweet, because I refuse to tarnish my search history by Googling his Twitter page, but the gist is that he called Meryl Streep “over-rated.” Meryl freakin’ Streep.
He’s told a lot of lies, but this might just be the most dishonest thing he’s ever said. Because if there’s one thing everyone can count on in this garbage world, it’s that Meryl Streep will always be amazing. Maybe Trump supporters will stop watching her movies. That’d show her! The whole boycott Rogue One thing was a huge success. It may have made one or two dollars, but nothing more than that. I bet Disney is going to cancel any and all upcoming Star Wars movies.
Bottom line: I can’t believe I got to watch this live with my own two eyes, and I’m glad we have Meryl Streep on our side for the next four years. I hope she wins something next year too, just to hear what she’ll say.
