Well, far be it for us to walk away from a fun internet trend. Especially when you have a large group of women who spend a decent amount of time loving, hating, stalking, fangirling over, adoring, talking about, and generally obsessing over fictional characters. We kind of feel like this trend was started just for us, actually. Or maybe one of us secretly started this little movement…we can be a little sneaky sometimes.
That guy isn’t one of our fictional characters. But, these guys are:
Laura
My three fictional characters that best describe me are: Lydia Deetz, Louise Belcher, and Liz Lemon. Having just now written them out, I realize that all three names begin with and ‘L’ and so does my name….purely coincidental, I promise.
Louise Belcher is like my alter ego. She’s the youngest child in her little family, like myself. She’s a total smart ass who enjoys yelling at people, like me. She’s funny, passionate, and vengeful. She can mess with her siblings, but don’t you dare even try it. Also, my maiden name sounds like her name. Laura Fletcher, Louise Belcher. Oh, and my mother has always called me Laura Louise when she’s particularly exacerbated with me.
Liz Lemon; any woman who wakes up in the middle of the night to eat cheese and sing a special cheese song is my spirit animal. Liz Lemon is super smart, super funny, and loves eating. Her personal life is a shit show and her professional life isn’t much better. It’s like we were separated at birth.
My favorite movie as a child was Beetlejuice. I see a lot myself in Lydia Deetz. She has a dark side that attracts her to the strange and unusual. She’s deeply sensitive and hates modern furnishings. She know’s what’s up.
Emily
Wonder Woman and Mary Poppins could maybe be considered the same reason – they could do no wrong. I’m not practically perfect in every way but I am a perfectionist. I have a bag that is like the tapestry bag Mary carries full of all the right things needed at just the right time. It has actually been referred to as the Mary Poppins bag.
I’ve always identified with Wonder Woman since the early 80’s where I watched the TV show in my Wonder Woman underoos! Like her I prefer to be diplomatic first but will fight when necessary.
And then there is Monica Geller. Some probably would pick Phoebe for me but I don’t think I’m that eclectic. I like to cook and I plan the parties for my groups of friends. Again, it goes back to that attempt for perfection! Dang Virgo!

Elinor Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility
Like Elinor, I’m just trying to live my quiet life and deal with my problems whilst surrounded by people who live their lives in a much more Marianne kind of way.
Megara from Hercules
The Chandler Bing of Disney women, Meg is sarcastic and cynical, but also has a soft spot for sweet hunky guys. She is me.
Lars Lindstrom from Lars and the Real Girl
Shy, doesn’t like to be touched, and cares about fake people more than a lot of real people.

After some deliberation, and the realization that the variety of personality traits and depth in fictional women vs. fictional men is woefully underrepresented, I came up with Jane Foster, Elizabeth Bennet, and Amanda Woods (not all one word). These three ladies are determined to dictate their own lives and create their own opportunities with an unhampered ambition and drive. Their theme song should be “Unstoppable” by Sia.
Some may think Jane Foster is a flat character, just a love interest for Thor, but those people haven’t bothered to look at Jane with scrutiny. She’s actually a brilliant physicist who is a dreamer and a doer, working tirelessly to break a barrier in the concept of reality as we know it. Thor serves as an asset in her research, and she will literally stop at nothing to retrieve him for her own use. When she’s invaded by the aether in Thor 2, she doesn’t shy away from the task of saving the universe through self-sacrifice. Her courage and commitment to scientific discovery is unparalleled in the MCU franchise, as Dr. Bruce Banner lacks courage after his gamma radiation incident and Tony Stark only cares about protecting the Earth. Oh yeah, and she punches Loki in the face because he mind-controlled her friend and mentor. Don’t mess with Jane Foster.
Liz Bennet‘s caustic humor is the cream that rises to the top of her game of wits among the insufferable whims of high society. She refutes Mr. Darcy despite that it will save her family, because she wants to marry for herself and not others. Ultimately she and Fitzwilliam can overcome their pride and prejudices through actual communication, and both achieve their mutual goal.
Amanda Woods is the epitome of a fiercely successful woman who hasn’t become a total bitch (vs. the boss in Devil Wears Prada). Her work is inherently creative, but also highly commercial, requiring different parts of the brain…that’s why they pay her the big bucks. After the relationship she’d trusted in breaks down, she intentionally restructures her space to reengage with her whole and free self. Her depth of character is impressive, and the way she confronts her fears head-on is something I really respect.

I’ll admit that the first character I thought of when I went to do this was Bella Swan. Not because I necessarily think she’s so much like me, but because if I was going to be fictionally married to any character, I’d want it to be Edward.
ANYWAY, the real answers:
Belle, from Beauty and the Beast– It’s mostly because of the booknerd thing, but anyone who know much about me gets why the “I want so much more than they’ve got planned” line fits for me. (If you know nothing about me, I was born without a uterus, which generally means biological kids are off the table as an option. My husband and I went to India, had IVF done, and hired a surrogate. This was basically in no one’s plans. But our daughter–my mini-me!–is our personal miracle.)
Emma, from Emma–I would like to say I’m like Elizabeth Bennett, but Emma is really a better fit. Like her, I often got in trouble in my younger years for running my mouth and thinking I knew how to run other people’s lives (most of the time, I didn’t.). Thankfully, life experience and marrying my personal version of Mr. Knightley has helped me grow up.
Eadlyn Shreave from The Heir and The Crown by Kiera Cass–Eadlyn is…not the most beloved character Kiera Cass ever created (that would be Maxon). She is very satisfied with who she is. She has a lot of opinions. She doesn’t like it when other people tell her what to do. She’s all about girl power. She can be a brat. And…all of that describes me.
If you’re wondering after reading this list how anyone puts up with me, I don’t blame you. But let’s just say: 1. My husband is a saint and 2. I do keep a LOT of my thoughts in my head where they belong.
Beth
Beca from Pitch Perfect is me for lots of reasons but mainly: the singing and the disdain for people who take singing super seriously. I’m a singer, but I do it for fun. I do it because I like to harmonize with other good singers and because it brings me joy. Whenever someone has called and asked me to join a group or a choir or a “serious endeavor” I have found a not so legit excuse. (Except for church; I always sing in church choirs because I love gospel music like a lot).
Nick Miller: failed adult who hates haunted houses and can’t write werewolf novels. Me: same.
Annie Walker is me in every way. Her personality. Her humor. Her hatred of fake people. Her loyalty. Her love of fresh lemonade.
If you sum these guys up, it’s sarcasm and failure to adult. Me.
Courtney
Lloyd Dobbler from Say Anything is the male me. I’m a cynical, yet hopeless romantic. I’m awkward on my best days. If I give you my heart, don’t give me a pen…really, I have a million.
Andi Walsh from Pretty in Pink. Have I mentioned that I’m awkward? So is she. This was teenage me trying so hard to not embrace who I really was. I will hold onto Andi as a lesson to my daughters.
Julia Sugarbaker from Designing Women is the adult me, in my head. She is so fiercely loyal and will tell you exactly whats on her mind, feelings be damned. (It’s always with the best of intentions though.) I’ve yet to have my “And THATS the night the lights went out in Georgia!” moment, but I’ve been close. #adultgoals
